c. 1955

About the Item

Irving Lehman, Untitled (Woodland Reflection), watercolor, c. 1955. Unsigned, with the artist's estate stamp verso: 'Original Artwork By: IRVING G. LEHMAN Russian/American 1900-1982'. A fine, expressionist work, with fresh, vibrant colors, on heavy cream wove watercolor paper, the image extending to the sheet edges; a small loss to the bottom left sheet corner, the artist's original tack holes in the top left and right sheet corners, otherwise in excellent condition. Image size 14 3/4 x 19 7/8 inches. Float matted to museum standards, unframed. ABOUT THE ARTIST Painter, sculptor, printmaker, and designer, Irving Lehman (1900-1983) was born in Kyiv, Russia. As a teenager, he was inspired by the European avant-garde art movements before moving with his family to New York City. Lehman studied at the Art Students League, Cooper Union, and the National Academy of Art. Like many artists of his generation, he participated in the WPA during the Great Depression. After World War II, his work evolved into progressively greater abstraction, anticipating the gestural abstraction of the New York Abstract Expressionist School. Lehman worked for much of his career in New York City and upstate New York during the summers, moving to Chatham, NY, in later life. He had his first exhibition at ACA Gallery in 1934. He exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, National Academy of Design, Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art, Chicago Art Institute, and many other institutions. Internationally, his works have been shown in galleries in England, France, Italy, Israel, and Japan, and were included in an international traveling exhibition in Europe in 1951. Lehman was a member of American Abstract Artists, American Art Congress, Audubon Artists of America, and American Society of Contemporary Artists.
