Johann Seligmann: Engravings of Parrots After George Edwards, 1770, Framed

1770

About the Item

"Sammlung Verschiedenr Auslandischer und Selener Vogel", Nuremberg 1770-1773. Edited by Johann Michael Seligmann (1749 -1776): engravings with original hand-colouring after the drawings by George Edwards. A prominent English naturalist and ornithologist, George Edwards (1694 -1773) is best known for his work, ""A Natural History of Uncommon Birds"", which he published between 1743 and 1761 whilst Librarian to the Royal College of Physicians in London. It contains coloured engravings and descriptions of more than six hundred species ""not before described or delineated"" and introduced an English audience to many exotic birds from Europe, Asia and North and South America. Following the great popularity of Edwards' work, a German edition was published, with re-engraved plates, by Johann Michael Seligmann (1749 -1776), from which edition these engravings are taken. Presented in parcel-gilt, hand-made decalcomania frames. Framed size: 495 x 420 mm (19.5 x 16.5 inches)

The image depicts a street scene in 19th century New York in which Henry Bergh rebukes a carter, who is brutalizing his starving horse and making it drag the overloaded wagon. The here depicted Henry Bergh was the son of a German ship builder in New York and with the aid of his small private income, he spent most of his life fighting for laws protecting animals. Over fierce opposition and ridicule he obtained a charter in 1867 from State of New York forming the A.S.P.C.A. (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and in 1875 a similar one covering the prevention of cruelty to children. By 1893 all states had adopted laws based on his original statutes. And the artist, who painted this dramatic scene was Frederick Elmiger (1890-1975), an American illustrator. He frequently produced series - often with historical themes - for the Donald...
