Modern abstract figurative charcoal drawing of a woman by Texas-born artist Eugene Massin. The work features a central loosely rendered female figure seated in a high-backed peacock chair. Signed by artist in pencil in front lower right corner. Currently hung in a dark brown decorative frame. Dimensions Without Frame: H 33 in. x W 22.5 in. Artist Biography: Eugene Massin was born in Galveston, TX in 1920. As a young man, he enlisted in the Army during WWII, but before shipping overseas, he was sent to South Carolina to have eye surgery. There he met and married Helen, who worked at the hospital. After recovering, he shipped out and didn't return to the States until his son, Barry, was 2 years old. Upon his return, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the University of Chicago where he received his B.F.A. in 1948. He went on to receive his M. F. A in 1949 at the Escuela Univ. Bellas Artes in Mexico and became the 1st assistant to the renowned Mexican muralist David Alfara Sequieros. After various teaching assignments and studies took him to the Far East, Europe and South American, Gene moved to South Florida and was a professor of painting at the University of Miami from 1956 until 1985. Known most notably for is work with acrylic sheets, he was shown in a wide variety of galleries throughout the country during the 1950s-1970s. He passed away in 2003 in Florida were he had made his home.
