Artist Joe Giuffrida presents the Big Sur coast in its magnificent glory. "The smell of the saltwater air and the feel of the vastness of this part of the country were the guiding ideas behind this painting," says Joe. He uses an economy of marks on the surface to invite the observer into the painting. Joe uses a splatter technique along the coast in the foreground to create the feel of splashing salt water.

One of my favorite subjects to paint is a wooded landscape, being surrounded by trees and the colors and shadows they create. This is one of those scenes, accented by a mountain stream.About the Artist

Part of artist Judy Mudd's marine collection, her inspiration comes from numerous trips to the coast. Judy captures the brilliant sunset as it colors the sky above a lighthouse. For Judy Mudd, creating a work of art means much more than simply reproducing something she sees. “It is more than painting a subject, it is expressing a feeling,” she explains. Judy develops her paintings with thorough reconnaissance work. She goes out on photo shoots in a variety of atmospheric conditions, sketches outdoors, takes notes, and completes color and value studies. From there, back in the studio, she lets the paintbrush guide her.
