David Barnett
"Up North Series: Birch Bark Otter Lake, " Original Mixed Media by David Barnett

2003

About the Item

"Up North Series: Birch Bark Otter Lake" is an original oil pencil on birch bark piece by David Barnett, signed in the lower center. The pieces of bark often suggest to him what the image should be through their natural lines and knots. This is a very natural impulse for most people, even those of us who are not artists. For centuries human beings have seen a reflection of themselves in nature. In this instance, the small sliver of bark suggests a place lake filled with people in canoes. Art size: 1 1/2" x 6" Frame size: 11 1/4" x 15 1/4" Framed to conservation standards. Mounted on 100% rag foam core in a shadow box style frame with a contemporary natural maple moulding, all glazed in Museum Glass that filters 99% of UV rays to inhibit fading. David Barnett, an artist, collector, appraiser, and gallerist has been passionate about art from the early age of five. David’s career as an art dealer began at age nineteen when, as a fine arts student, he sponsored an exhibition of work by fellow student artists. In 1966, he opened his first gallery in a converted basement apartment at Wisconsin Avenue and 21st Street. In 1985 David moved his gallery from Wisconsin Avenue into the Old Button Mansion on State Street and has been active ever since. David’s talents for recognizing undervalued artists and for meeting the needs of art lovers, art collectors, and artists have created a vibrant, flourishing gallery and collection of over 6,000 works of art. David was born and raised in Wisconsin. He has been painting in watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels as well as fine art photography. David has more than 10 different series he has developed over the years. They include Abstract, Surrealism, Morph Dog, Up North Birch Bark, Impressions of Mexico City, Southwest, Fireworks, Famous Artist Paying Homage, and Garden Panorama. Influential artists include Vermeer, Miro, Kandinsky, Chagall, Nolde, and Klee. David has been featured in many magazines, newspapers, and public television programs regarding his beautiful gallery, collection and knowledge, and passion for fine art. David also has work in the permanent collection of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Arizona. In November 2005, he opened his second studio gallery in Hartland, Wisconsin.

"Willow Shadows at Chenequa" is an original pastel drawing on canson paper by Peggy Leonard. The artist signed the piece lower left. It depicts a row of willow trees with deep shadows. The artist used variations of green and blue. 12 3/4" x 19 1/2" art 18 3/4" x 26" frame Peggy Leonard received her BFA in painting and drawing and an associate’s degree in nursing from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She is both a registered nurse, and accomplished artist, residing in Milwaukee, WI. From the artist: “These paintings are my prayers,” muses Leonard, reflecting on her driving need to express herself through her art. “We are made of the stuff that requires us to respond with our hearts and hands. Often, it requires terrible sacrifice and suffering, something not everyone can understand. But it is done with reverence of life, not irreverence.” Leonard’s pastels and oil paintings capture her reverence of life and reflect her own life’s journey, including earlier forays into the wilderness. Her venture into art began in early childhood, as childless neighbors nurtured her natural ability to draw; concurrently, Leonard’s parents instilled a respect for academic excellence and the higher order of nurturing others. As a young nurse, Leonard “heard and saw poignant messages to travel while one was young and free…while one had one’s health.” Consequently, she took to the open road and public lands, camping across America for months at a time. During these years, her “celebration of the natural splendor of this country” helped shape her sense of artistic expression. She was moved by such sights as the sunset on St. Mary’s Lake...
