Frank Stack was born in Houston, TX on October 31, 1937, and is best known as a painter, printmaker and cartoonist.
Frank Stack graduated with a BFA from the University of Texas in Austin in 1959. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and received his MA from the University of Wyoming. Between 1963 and 2001, he served as an instructor and professor of art at the University of Missouri-Columbia. There he taught painting, drawing, watercolor, printmaking and comic art. In 2001 he retired and became professor emeritus.
Stack has published numerous editions of prints, specializing in etchings and lithographs. He also paints in oils and watercolors and is best known for his landscape and figure compositions. Although he is primarily a fine artist, Stack has also had a career as a cartoonist. In the 1960s and 1970s he was one of the founders of the underground comics movement, working under the pseudonym "Foolbert Sturgeon." He later published several short stories in the "graphic novel" format, including "The Lying Ear" and "The Bard Must Die." As a collaborator with Harvey Pekar, Stack has illustrated numerous stories in Pekar's ongoing series of "serious" comic books, "American Splendor". Stack also illustrated Pekar's graphic novel, "American Splendor: Our Cancer Year" (New York: Four Walls Eight Windows, 1994).
