About the Item

Pier Canosa (Italian, b. 1940), "Untitled: Portrait of a Woman 2", Abstract Figurative/ Portrait Charcoal Drawing signed and dated on Paper, 25.25 x 18.25, Late 20th Century, 1969 Colors: Red, Black and White Pier Canosa was born in Vasto, Italy in 1940. He has traveled a lot, especially along the oceans' streets. So, in his youth, he was lucky to visit the American museums with the benevolent help of the Italian Consul General, Vittorio Corderò of Montezemolo. These, having noticed the graphic ability of the young man, introduced him to some great ones collectors of the time such as David Rockfeller, who bought one of his early works. Although, after some time, he has visited many European and Italian museums as well . Pier Canosa has always proclaimed himself self-taught. Constantly in love with every formal elegance, he favored the artists of Art Nouveau, the pre-Raphaelites to finally reach the Nordic culture mannerists. From the rigor of the initial monochromes, it has gradually reached the current chromatic accents. It constantly abandons itself to the ironic and the bizarre implicitly rejecting every oneirically restless inclination. The large cruise ships (Homeric, Oceanic, Federico Costa), were the headquarters of his first personal. Since 1968, he lives and works in Genoa.

A drawing by Fernando Botero. "Dibujo a la Manera de Velasquez" is a portrait, charcoal and pastel on cardboard in an earth-tone palette by Latin American artist Fernando Botero. It is signed upper right, "Sobre Velazquez Botero -1-27-60 Para Rita. el recuerdo de uno payaso". His father died when he was young, and he was raised by his mother, along with his two brothers. He attended a Jesuit school in Medellín and from the age of 12 to 14, he attended a matador training school. The bull fight became a recurring theme in Botero’s early work and while he was in his early teens, he sold his pictures of bull fights in front of the arena. By the time he was 16 years of age, Botero was working as an illustrator for the local magazine El Colombiano. He also began writing articles about art theory, one of which, entitled Picasso and Non-Conformity in Art, led to his expulsion from the Jesuit school for its endorsement of Cubism. One of Botero’s important early works, Woman Crying...
