About the Item
French school end of 19th Century,
Portrait of a man,
charcoal on paper
Signed ? and dated 94 (?) on the upper right
Dedicated "A mon ami Gaguin (?)" on the lower right
Framed : 57.5 x 47.5 cm
This portrait of a man is highly characteristic of the art of the late 19th century, with overtones that clearly link it to the Symbolist movement. The post-impressionist technique and the look in the eyes of a man lost in thought add to its charm and mystery.
It is undoubtedly signed and dated, but the inscription in the top right is unfortunately too difficult to decipher to give any clues as to the artist's identity.
This is another mystery, as is the identity of the model, perhaps the friend to whom the work is dedicated.
