late 20th century still life oil painting with flowers and fruit signed

1986

About the Item

"Grey Pitcher" is a pastel still life by American artist Warren Brandt created in 1986. Warren Brandt is known for his still-life paintings being especially personal. Brandt would take objects from his home, arrange them himself, and paint them from life in his studio. Heavily inspired by the French masters, notably Paul Cézanne, the use of lively color, texture, and contrast gives the still life a depth and vivacity that can only be found in the works of a handful of still-life painters, true masters of their craft. 19 3/4" x 22 1/2" art 28" x 31 1/8" framed Framed to conservation standards in a 100% rag, bevel accented matting. All housed in a genuine gold leaf moulding. "Mr. Brandt was born in Greensboro, N.C., and moved to New York after high school, attending Pratt Institute at night. He studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League and, after five years as an official portraitist in the Army during World War II, continued his education under the G.I. Bill. He studied with Philip Guston and Max Beckmann at Washington University in St. Louis. All the while he kept close ties with Abstract Expressionists in New York, and his art reflected their influence. Brandt’s work is defined by many art critics by his use of brilliant, highly chromatic color in his Matisseesque nudes, still life, and studio scenes and his expressionistic brushwork, much like that of Willem de Kooning, all while incorporating the bold strength of line characteristic of his Washington University teacher, Max Beckmann."
