About the Item

"My work is based on visualizations of energy, inspired by particle physics and forms in nature. I use the lines of colliding atomic particles to explore a new language of abstraction. Fusing physics, digital technology, and painting, I create hyper-energetic compositions based on the unstable paths of speeding particles after collision. I am interested in the structures and patterns of movement revealed by these collisions. To create my paintings, I generate animations of atomic particle collisions. From these animations, I capture still images, which become templates for the work. A collision is captured and digitized through the lens of mosaic, collapsing the highest tech with the lowest tech imaging. Conflating mosaic with the digital, form is created by gluing hand-painted paper squares onto grounds of canvas printed with digital noise patterns. Using acrylic and watercolor, I play with color and visual textures to create layers of depth and movement. The construction of form becomes labor-intensive, meditative and contemplative. What takes seconds to create in a collision, takes weeks to interpret into a painting. What emerges are paintings which reflect a tension between technology and handcraft revealing states of flux; mining the relationship between algorithmic data and the pictorial while exploring the emotional possibilities of abstraction. In all these works, I aim for an intense visual experience of flux- where color, line, and form simultaneously coalesce and break down." Carter Hodgkin, 2023

"Hey Did We Scratch?" - Abstract Expressionist Composition Detailed and layered composition by Leroy W. Parker (American, 1941). This piece is divided into a checkerboard, with a variety of overlaid patterns and textures. There are several types of handmade paper applied to the canvas, likely made by Parker himself. Signed "Leroy Wheeler Parker" in the lower right corner. "#1" and an up arrow are written on verso. Tag on verso with artist info, title, media, and date. No frame, but the edges of the canvas are painted for a frame-less display. Leroy W. Parker (American, b. 1941) is an artist from Oklahoma who now resides in Lafayette, California. Parker earned his BFA in painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1966, and then went on to earn his MFA in 1968 from the same institution. He is a Professor of Art at San Jose State University. He has taught classes in fine arts, life drawing, ceramics, paper making (which he instituted in 1984), and sculpture since 1969. Parker has also served on the State Art Commission for sculptural grants. One of his pieces is held in the San Jose Museum of Art. We were two boys and six girls in the family. The most mundane things were magical and special to me. I liked to draw, color, make things, and plant things. I loved the woods and the earth, and watching storms with thunder and lightning. We moved from Oklahoma when I was 11. In the late 1950s, I attended Oakland Technical High School where I met artist Sam Richardson...

Jacqueline Dee Parker’s collages are interdisciplinary in approach and concept. Her materials include antique literature and music books and other ephemera. Just as words, sounds, and images rooted in memory may trigger the composition of a poem, collage is a mode of perception that prompts integration of different sorts of accumulated language. Fragments of lived experience are the bricks and mortar the artist uses to build new spaces informed by time’s passage. Early life in the home of an architect and a violinist shaped Jacqueline Dee Parker’s aesthetic. Exposure to the art of architecture encouraged interest in spatial relationships, taught her to read elevations and visualize their 3-D intentions, and, at construction sites, to appreciate the evolution of concept to form. Music played through and where words ended, roused layers of emotional response, and altered the sense of place and time. Together, these ingredients fostered an affinity for abstraction and design. Jacqueline Dee Parker's "Ars Poetica" series is inspired from the poem of the same name from Roman poet...
