Charlene Tan
Researching and Remembering (Yakan, Green Tapioca)

2018-2019

About the Item

Through a meditative practice, Tan glues various materials such as Tapioca Pearls, seen here, on wood panels in intricate patterns directly inspired by traditional Filipino tribal tattoos, regional textiles and the fabrics handwoven and food created by her grandmother, a seamstress, embroiderer and home chef.. Tan’s works with their subtle colors variation, unique texture and complex designs are imbued with a strong, almost at times spiritual presence. Her quest, drawn from her childhood memories, is an expression of her unique artistic language. These elaborate pieces are a testament to the power of personal history, embedded in larger narratives and a loving homage from the artist to her family and rich heritage.
