Joseph Alessandri
Mégalithes. Large Scale Abstract Expressionist Mixed Media Wall Sculpture

1999

About the Item

Large Abstract Expressionist mixed media from the 'Megaliths' series by French artist Joseph Alessandri. Signed to the front bottom left side and dated 99 and signed with a reference number to the back. A superb and creative painted panel made with superimposed cut outs of cardboard, wood and metal. Sculpture or painting? This work straddles the two. The Megalith has great depth of dark tones and yet here and there flashes of colour and shapes appear as if cinders burning brightly from the ashes of a burnt object. The work also looks impressive in profile with some areas layered to a degree that they protrude several centimetres from the panel. A real talking point. Born on February 16, 1940 in Tunis, Joseph Alessandri was one of the great painters of the South of France whose universe was essentially made up of painted and sometimes burnt reliefs with applied material, wood, iron, sand, fabric, cardboard, paper, resin, leather, stone and plaster from found objects. The memory of the Mediterranean and the nostalgia of its roots are interpreted in sometimes monumental ensembles where the palette, extremely reduced, illustrates the lessons of the past of art while going beyond the limits of the pictorial grammar which he patiently acquired in the Schools of Fine Arts of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. After finishing his training Alessandri then spent 7 years working with a master glass maker before finally choosing to devote his life full time to painting and sculpture. He was close to the painter Mario Prassinos and Louis Pons, whom he met in Eygalières, a town in the Alpilles where he lived out his days until 2017 after a long time spent in Marseille. His first exhibitions were held in Marseille then in Saint Remy de Provence (the city museum houses several of his works), in Lyon, Paris where the Visconti gallery had exclusivity, then Switzerland, the United States, etc. Is it painting or sculpture? Alessandri used mainly wood as a material. Wood that he cut, planed, polished or left in its raw state and with which he developed singular pieces which were assemblies of pieces pegged, perforated, veneered onto various sorts of panels. From there arose a whole fantastic world of characters and beasts inspired by the mystical side of African Art.
