The background:
This correspondence refers to merits and awards won by the Italian actress. Indeed, on March 21st, 1956, Anna Magnani was the first Italian interpreter in the history of the Academy Awards to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, and the first ever non-English native speaker , awarded to her for the interpretation of Serafina Delle Rose in the movie La rosa tatuata (1955), with Burt Lancaster, directed by Daniel Mann. For the same role, she will also win a BAFTA for International Actress of the Year and the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. Magnani did not attend the ceremony: the Oscar was collected by Marisa Pavan. When an American journalist announced that Anna Magnani had won the Oscar, she remained silent and then exclaimed: "Magnani is happy!".
Anna Maria Magnani (Rome, 1908 - 1973) The Italian actress regarded as one of the greatest actresses of Italian and World cinema, she was known as a symbol of Romanity and admired for her explosive acting and real life portrayals of characters.
Countess Anna Laetitia Pecci (Rome, 1885 - Marlia, 1971)
Better known as Mimì , the Italian noblewoman was an art collector, patron and nephew of Pope Leo XIII. Extremely volcanic, she was very active in the cultural field, opening numerous lounges, galleries and theaters. In 1919 she married Cecil Blumenthal, later changed to Blunt, a wealthy Jewish banker from New York, heir to an important collection of nineteenth-century French painting. His Parisian and Roman salons was frequented by artists and intellectuals of the caliber of Alberto Moravia, Mario Praz, Salvador Dalì, Paul Valery, Poulenc, Paul Claudel.
