About the Item
This Japanese tobacco pouch dates from the Meiji period (1868-1912). It is crafted in ray skin and is decorated wtih a large clasp (kanemono) depicting a coiled dragon. The silver plated chain is held together by a netsuke. The pouch served as a contemporary fashion accessoire of the wealthy. Articles manufactured before March 1, 1947 and comprising less than 20% ivory by volume, not subject to the regulations relating to the ban on trade in elephant ivory (Orders of August 16, 2016 and May 4, 2017).
