April Midkiff
"Counterbalance I" Abstract Painting with Impressive Sense of Motion

About the Item

This piece is framed. The price reflects the framed piece. Unframed dimensions: 52 × 52 inches. When in the studio, April Midkiff finds herself drawn to the unbridled freedom and rawness of such artists like de Kooning, Motherwell and Richter. Their works have sparked her passion for experimenting, trying new approaches, and constantly striving to do things a better way. In contrast, the works of Calder, Klee and Louis draw her in with their seemingly effortless balance and harmony. April thoroughly enjoys the process and the challenge of creating new art. She strives to find a balance between freedom and restraint during her creative process and embracing experimentation is key. April Midkiff is a fourth generation Arizonan, growing up in the small town of Waddell in the far West Phoenix Valley. Spending her childhood surrounded by farms, animals, and the desert April formed a strong connection with nature. Her love for Arizona and all of its diverse natural beauty runs deep.

"My art practice crosses three continents over two decades. The works consider the images and ideas that mark my journey into the spiritual and cultural dimensions of painting as a creative activity. During a period when I have carried adventurous journeys across several different social and geographic divides, I began to search deeper for an understanding of who I am, and where I am. My paintings started to explore the idea of self as the most fundamental element of human nature; I tried to seek my identity as I examined human nature." Provenance Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York. Landfield joined the David Whitney...
