About the Item

In this black acrylic word painting on white wood, Aron Hill paints three words that use the prefix 'pro,' meaning advancing or projecting forward -- two verbs and an adjective. As both visual imagery and language, words in artwork give powerful direction to thought. While text in art is not new – think of illuminated letters in medieval manuscripts – the use of language in 20th century art, in Dadaist, Surrealist or Pop art including Ed Ruscha's word paintings, forced viewers to challenge the nature of art. There is tension between reading and seeing a work of art. How this tension is used is integral to the artist’s visual message. Hill's practice is focused on a formalist type of painting that recalls aspects of minimalism and color field paintings though with references to the figure throughout. They find conceptual company in the late Modernist paintings produced particularly in Canada. The choice of a primary colors and restricted medium, is a conscious restraint informed by Hill’s artistic influences such as Jack Bush and William Perehudoff. The work's graphic nature relies on the sheer flatness this medium produces. Aron Hill currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. They graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. Hill then completed their MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Aron Hill has exhibited internationally, occasionally lectures, and writes.
