Burton Kramer
Moog Music 5C5Q2 - bright, geometric abstraction, modernist, acrylic on canvas

2007

About the Item

Rectangles and squares, large and small, in grey, green, red, blue and orange, dance across an orthogonal of light blue on a white ground in this canvas by Burton Kramer. The title of the painting refers to the Moog electronic synthesizer that became an industry standard after its use in an award winning 1968 album of music by Bach. The numbers and letters in the title of this work may refer to Moog settings. This precise, yet lively composition reflects the intersection of music, colour and form. Kramer has commented that his lyrical abstractions "do not abstract the experience of reality, as we know it. They provide the viewer with an alternate for reality, just as music often does." Framed dimensions are 43 x 43 inches. Like 20th century European painter Wassily Kandinsky, renowned for his experiments with synesthesia of color and music, Kramer explores the language of visual forms and sound. Kramer trained at Yale University (MFA), The Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (BSc), The Royal College of Art, London (Fulbright Scholar) and The State University of New York. He gained international success with a number of group and solo exhibitions in North America and Europe. He is one of Canada's most influential graphic designers. Notably, Kramer designed the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation logo in 1974. In 1999, Kramer received the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from Arts Ontario and in 2002 was awarded ‘The Order of Ontario’ by the Province and an Honorary Doctorate from Ontario College of Art & Design. His work is in many private and public collections including the Royal Ontario Museum.

Color and the grid are the focus of Ristvedt's paintings that through one's lens of experience will reveal a narrative. "Painting is my freedom 'to be' in the world, to transform what I think and feel about life, to express the essence of things that matter. Colour is the magical sensation and substance, the 'philosopher's stone,' that for me represents hope in a time of great challenge for us all." Milly Ristvedt Early in her career in Toronto in the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski and Frank Stella. Ristvedt's work can be found in major public collections including the Art Gallery...

Large abstract acrylic painting on canvas by Amanda Andersen; one in a series of four created in 2020 during anxiety filled times due mostly to Covid. The shapes in these works represented a balloon at first–a common subject in the artist's earlier work, which honored the beauty and elegance of hot air balloons and also celebrated their invitation for a romantic escape. We all wanted an escape in 2020. The large shape can also be seen as a window; the static hole we all peered out from to check if the world was still out there. With stripes–also a common visual element in the artist's work, it may even suggest prison bars...
