Dieter Kränzlein
o.T. (Gr22VV) - green contemporary modern wall sculpture painting relief

2021

About the Item

o.T. (Gr22VV) is a new size 22x22 cm contemporary modern wall sculpture painting relief by German artist Dieter Kränzlein, bridging the gap between his unique 15x15 cm and the much heavier and more expensive 25x25-30x30 cm reliefs. This relief is made from limestone and it is partly finished with a thin layer of green ink that has penetrated into the limestone. Due to the properties of the limestone, small inclusions of organic materials can be seen, giving a really nice natural touch to this otherwise minimalist work. The scuplture hangs slightly free from the back wall, creating a floating visual experience, where different viewing angles result in different relief patterns. The sculpture is signed by the artist on the back. Dieter Kränzlein (1962, Germany) took on an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor when he was twenty years old, inspired by the work of a stonemason that he met. After completing his apprenticeship he accidentally met with Hungary-born painter-sculptor Franz Dakáy who lived in the same village. Visiting Dakáy’s studio, Dieter immediately knew what he wanted his future to be. He decided against formally studying art and instead became a personal student of Dakáy. After four years Dieter started his own studio as a self-employed artist. He works primarily with Norwegian marble and Mooser limestone, out of which he creates freestanding sculptures and wall reliefs. Using an angle grinder, he transforms the shape and surface of the marble and limestone into objects with regular and irregular grid patterns giving the stone rythm and movement. The combination of his artistic signature and the material properties result in unique works of art. His marble pieces reflect light when played in the sun through their crystalline properties, whereas limestone with its iron packed inclusions is looking fragile and porous. In his recent works he has started to apply ink to the marble and limestone. Using red, yellow, green and blue ink he transforms the original materials once more. From a distance the natural skin of the material is hidden by these colours, but at close-range the original surface with its carved and grinded looks has a strong impact on the viewer. It is as if one can feel the inherent time contained within the stone and the countless days and weeks that went into the making of these objects. Over the last twenty years Dieter Kränzlein’s works have been exhibited at prestigious art fairs in Germany and Switzerland as well as in the USA, Canada and Australia. His work is part of numerous collections, including the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, Museum Biedermann, Portland Museum of Art, Oregon, and the City of Overland Park, Kansas.

Educated at Hunter College in New York, he has shown consistently in solo and group exhibitions since 2002, including locations in New York, Berlin, Los Angeles, Basel, Madrid and Paris. He currently lives and works in New York. Through his abstract paintings, drawings and sculptures he finds the sweet spot where minimalism, Pop Art, and the political collide. Andisheh Avini is known for his patterned silkscreen painting created on carpet and wood, which are informed by the history and culture of Iran. Avini frequently takes familiar political images and recontextualizes them, prompting the viewer to consider Middle Eastern politics from another perspective. Blending the visual vocabulary of his Iranian heritage with aesthetic and material experimentation, Avini’s work offers a meditation on the experiences and memories that shape our identities. He has used a variety of exotic materials including marquetry or Khatam – a traditional Iranian craft of inlaid wood, crystalline protrusions of actual minerals, peacock feathers, mother-of-pearl and parchment often in abstract geometric compositions, mediums associated with traditional Persian craft— with nods towards Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, and other Western art movements. He has shown in many prominent galleries including solo exhibitions at Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York), Galerie Frank...
