About the Item

Red Rocks by Janet Keith [2019] Original Acrylic paint on heavy watercolour paper Image size: H:84 cm x W:59.5 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:84 cm x W:59.5 cm x D:0.10cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look Red Rocks is an original abstract landscape painting by Janet Keith. The first time the artist visited the deserts of the American South West she was awe struck by the colours and shapes of the landscape - so different to anything she had seen before. Once home in her UK studio her impressions of those colours completely transformed her palette and the shapes emerging seemed reminiscent of mesas, buttes and other topographical features. This painting is not a representation of any place in particular but rather an evocation of the artists very vivid experience of the desert. Janet Keith is an award winning contemporary painter based in the U.K. Her painting is a response to the visual excitement and beauty of her surroundings. Her artistic roots are in outdoor painting, working directly from life. However, that rich experience now informs a more abstract and mostly studio based approach to painting - which has become an exploration of how spontaneous gesture and considered pictorial structure weave together in building an expressive painting. Janet works in an unplanned, improvisational and intuitive way - with one mark or colour opening possibilities for the next. Sometimes this results in an entirely abstract image. Often the painting echoes the very rural surroundings of her studio and influences from travels near and far. Janet comments, ‘…I am so often surprised to have made a painting which I could never have imagined or planned in advance. I like to think that in painting I am releasing some ‘joie de vivre’ and reflecting back into the world some of the wonder I find there…'. Janet has Degrees in both the History of Art and Painting. She exhibits regularly in the UK and has paintings in the permanent public collection of the Civil Service of Northern Ireland and private collections in the UK, USA, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and Australia.

One starts at one place - the blank canvas, and hopefully ends at a resolution. Sometimes one gets lost. My aim in this journey is to create original, contemporary art that is grounded in place. Chance and opportunity are the travelling companions; but the art is to know when the journey is complete. I tend to work in series, with references to locations that are abstracted, reflecting on themes of colour, movement and space. In some themes I use concepts...

The textural, earthy tones of the moor are complimented by the green/greys and dusky pinks of the sky. I wanted to create movement in this piece, with fast moving scudding clouds. Chalk pastel and Inktense were worked over the earth colours to create moorland grasses. This piece is presented in a soft, off white deep cut mount.
