The Stacker series of painitngs use mundane materials in their construction – carpentry off-cuts. The arbitrary depths of these materials set up a “compositional problem” for me to “solve” through surface intervention (flat colour and graphic forms which I use to both balance and topple the composition). The painting includes smaller circular elements which I often employ as stand-ins for human or perhaps robotic beings, and which appear to function as catalysts for the action taking place within the image.
