Jim Forsberg

About the Item

American painter Jim Forsberg was born in Minnesota in 1919 and died in Provincetown, Massachusetts, in 1991. Forsberg studied with Hans Hofmann in New York City in the 1950s and his early work in printmaking and other media established him as a highly influential artist in the thriving art colony in Provincetown, Massachusetts, as well as one of its most accomplished and varied figures. Later journeys through non-objective art, collage, and explorations of other graphic elements gave way to more conventional oil paintings like this undated work which meditates on space and perspective by using fractal dimensionality and a shifting source of light. Forsberg’s most canonical works are so diverse in subject, technique, medium, and narrative that nearly each one - especially larger canvases - is unique to the artist’s oeuvre.
