Katherine Sandoz
"(Jubilee) Sullivan's Island" - Abstract Landscape Painting - Diebenkorn

2019

About the Item

"(Jubilee) Sullivan's Island" is an abstract landscape painting featuring hues of green, hot pink, orange and blue. Katherine Sandoz is inspired by the work of Helen Frankenthaler, Richard Diebenkorn, Morris Louis, Vincent Van Gogh, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and Neil Welliver. Katherine Sandoz has chosen to mark her 25 years as an artist and her 50 years on this earth, with a release or trumpet blast of paintings. Over the past year and a half, she has created four year-long projects of which JUBILEE is the last. While painting both indoors and out, from life and from photographs, with the JUBILEE series, Sandoz revisits favorite subjects and locations painting them again and anew. After reflecting on the works she has created over the past 25 years, she re-presents both subject and mode within the new works. By shifting the palette and alternating the translucence and opacity of the individual passages, Sandoz asks the viewer to shift their perception about what is being shown and from what vantage point or points. With many layers and criss crossing of complementary colors, the canvas records observations of light, weather, time, color and hints at changing practices, perceptions and perspectives both physical, intellectual and emotional. Most importantly, the work makes notes on the perennial and ever-changing beauty found near to the artist and her home in Savannah, Georgia. With the marshes, waterways and people of the low-country offering perennial inspiration, Katherine Sandoz examines the quotidian and offers work that celebrates what is precious and unique. She studies, analyzes, and re-frames small moments, the mundane, neglected details of the day and the diurnal rhythms that, in turn, inspire illustrations, paintings, fibers-based works, installations and public art. Utilizing passages of transparent and opaque, warm and cool, textured and smooth layers, Sandoz creates dynamic compositions allowing the viewer to experience the subject matter from multiple vantage points at once. Sandoz' paintings and fiber works have exhibited internationally. She also creates portraits, art and installations for private clients as well as for fashion, contemporary culture and lifestyle brands. She contributes to a number of magazines and online blogs with her quirky illustrations and writing.

    By Marina Dunbar

"Wildflower" features hues of pink, yellow, orange, blue, green and purple. Marina Dunbar is inspired by the work of Paul Jenkins and Morris Louis. “I often think about painting in three dimensions, rather than two,” says Marina. “When engaging with the surface, I am considering how the arrangement and folds of the canvas will influence the composition.” Her process is as rooted in the physical construction of form as it is propelled by the medium’s inherent fluidity. The title of her exhibition – Fluent Form – refers to the practice of exploring opposing concepts, such as density and fragility, continuity and impermanence, within the same material. As one progression leads to the next, Marina studies the medium without premeditation, remaining sensitive to nuances within her process. Marina has introduced natural elements such as dry pigments and sand into these paintings. Sand is a physical object, yet its existence is a representation of the passage of time. It is the result of rock erosion, and it is a material that continually assembles into new patterns. In the Buddhist tradition, sand is used to convey beauty and ephemerality through the construction and subsequent destruction of mandalas...
