Milly Ristvedt
Breathing Space for Agnes - large, bright, yellow, stripes, acrylic on canvas

2012

About the Item

Vertical stripes of buttercup yellow and cloud blue are each separated from the other by a mere whisper of white canvas. The verticals appear to breathe rhythmically against the picture plane in this homage to American painter Agnes Martin. They evoke Martin's delicate, meticulously penciled grid works and her pursuit of inner peace. Milly Ristvedt, MA, RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964 after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art. At 24, her work was included in the Centennial Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario and featured at the National Gallery of Canada. She was chosen for prestigious exhibitions in Winnipeg, Paris and Lausanne. By 1969, Ristvedt was sharing a studio with Jack Bush and showing with the Carmen Lamanna Gallery. Over her long career, Ristvedt has had over 50 solo exhibitions. Her abstract, acrylic canvases are held in private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and Harvard University. Barry Lord observed in Art in America (1969) that Ristvedt’s paintings were “…more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.” Ristvedt is represented exclusively by Oeno Gallery.

  • What You See - large, soft, blue, pink, gestural abstract, acrylic on canvas
    By Milly Ristvedt
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
A flurry of washed passages in a sky blue and rose pink mixed with passages of brilliant yellow, black, turquoise and cherise with curved strands of fixed pastel. These fine lines in bright green, electric blue, pink, cherise and black create spatial tension and depth within the large picture plane. This painting from 1980 is an early example of Ristvedt's ability to create a poetic narrative of space, light, texture and movement through color. Milly Ristvedt (b. 1942, Kimberley, BC) RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964 after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art. • Phoenix - large, colorful, contemporary, abstract, diptych, acrylic on canvas
    By Milly Ristvedt
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
Horizontal bars of blue, maroon, cherry red, pink, lemon yellow, burnt orange and green communicate on a soaked sand-coloured ground in the two panels that form this 9-foot square acrylic diptych painting on canvas. The rhythm of the spaces between the short lengths of colour creates a dialogue of movement that leads the eye upwards through the large picture plane. About the inspiration for the work, the artist wrote: "This is one of the rare paintings that I saw clearly in a dream and painted almost exactly as I saw it. It relates back to the four-panel work, Lock-Up (1972), done a couple of months earlier, where I used the physical break between panels as an edge to anchor some colour bars. In Phoenix, some bars are anchored while others float within the larger ground colour." This painting was included in the exhibition catalogue Milly Ristvedt-Handerek: Paintings of a Decade (1979). Milly Ristvedt, RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964 after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art. In Toronto, during the 1960s and 1970s, she was making and exhibiting large-scale paintings alongside a small but defined group of non-figurative painters who, like Ristvedt, had planted...

  • Colapesce Sinks into the Depths of the Ionian Sea - abstract, acrylic on canvas
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
At once elegant and expressive, this dynamic and colourful abstract painting is one in a series created by Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak in collaboration with an Italian artist. The colour palette is vivid—deep blue, yellow, orange, green, pink turquoise and melon. Tosczak is perhaps best known for his beautiful figurative sculptural work. Angela Letizia Renzi, the Italian artist who worked with Tosczak is a ‘lover of literature and linguistics.’ This acrylic painting was inspired by an Italian myth—the story of a young man who saved the island of Sicily from sinking by diving underwater and shouldering the columns that hold up the island. Renzi and Tosczak paint these canvases together and at the same time. Their artistic interaction is important to the works they create. “The philosophical artistic formation of one and the literary humanistic of the other, are intertwined in a common vocabulary, a visual language of colour, gesture and form: this is our lexicon, our morphosyntax, the grammar of our language." Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
