About the Item
Peggy Cyphers “Bullfrog Pond” (2018-2023) acrylic, sand and gold leaf on canvas 30”x24”
This painting was featured in a solo exhibition of paintings at the Front Room Gallery entitled, "Passages" This exhibition showcases the unparalleled talent of Peggy Cyphers in capturing the intricate beauty of the environment in her paintings. Cyphers seamlessly integrates elements from diverse painting traditions into her large-scale abstract landscape paintings. Drawing inspiration from Chinese landscape paintings, Native American art, and Post-War abstraction, Cyphers creates dynamic and evocative artworks that bridge cultural and artistic boundaries. The fluid strokes and pouring with sand and paint have roots in the painting traditions of Chinese landscape paintings, Native American Art and PostWar Abstraction. Her large-scale abstract landscape paintings serve as meditations on the interconnectedness of cultures and ecosystems, inviting viewers to contemplate the beauty and fragility of the natural world. Cyphers' work exemplifies the transformative power of art to transcend boundaries and forge connections across time and space.
With an ethereal blend of color, texture, and form, Peggy Cyphers transports viewers into a realm where the boundaries between art and nature blur seamlessly. Her monumental canvases, often reminiscent of canyons viewed from below, beckon audiences to explore the depths of their imagination while contemplating the fragility and grandeur of our natural world.
Through her distinctive artistic language, Peggy Cyphers invites viewers to contemplate the environmental challenges facing our planet today. Her burnt ochre cliff walls and contrasting blue skies serve as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness between humanity and the Earth, urging us to embrace our role as stewards of the environment.
Central to Cyphers' work is her fascination with the deep primordial past—the origins of life and the evolutionary processes that have shaped the Earth's ecosystems over millions of years. Through her art, she delves into the mysteries of ancient landscapes, drawing inspiration from geological formations, prehistoric flora and fauna, and the cyclical rhythms of nature.
In her exploration of entropy, Cyphers confronts the concept of disorder and decay as inherent aspects of the natural world. She acknowledges the impermanence of existence and the inevitable cycles of creation and destruction that characterize the evolutionary history of the Earth. By embracing entropy as a fundamental force, she encourages viewers to confront the fragility and resilience of life on our planet.

- Gestural Abstract Large Scale Painting, Vibrant Contemporary "Sapphire Bridge"By Debra DrexlerLocated in New York, NY48"x72" signed on reverse by the artist. This is a contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Bright, nearly neon orange and pink fields of color are contrasted by an electric blue large path brushstroke. The composition and color are reminiscent of the coral, magenta and rose sunset against a blue body of water. Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color. The luminosity and saturation also mirror the unique quality of light and tropical color interactions in Hawai’i, where Drexler also lives. Her work is driven by an athletic painting...Category
