Contemporary Hard Edge Abstract Geometric Origami painting in oil on two wood panels in saturated jewel tones.
While Ricardo Mulero readily oscillates between abstraction and representation, his paintings are alike in their handling of light, geometric composition, and painterly brushwork. The artist employs the traditional Venetian method of painting, applying thin, translucent layers of oil paint to a traditional gesso surface to achieve exquisite depth and luminosity.
In his Origami series, Mulero renders flora and fauna as folding diagrams, distilling the form to hard-edge geometric compositions. The iris, a particularly curvaceous flower, is a daring choice for a subject in this series. Applying straight lines to a two-dimensional surface, Mulero suggests that the flower is unfolding and expanding towards innumerable vanishing points. These lines reach out of the painting to envelop the viewer, drawing them into to the jewel-like center from which all light radiates.
The artist employs the traditional Venetian method of painting in each piece, applying thin translucent layers of oil paint to a traditional gesso surface to achieve exquisite depth and luminosity. In the aptly named "Origami" series, Mulero presents flora and fauna through different stages of folding diagrams, distilling the form into geometric compositions. Drifting into a representational realm, the "Back Stairs" series follows this exploration of geometric abstraction using interiors and the emulation of light and shadow as its stage. Local utilitarian structures and agrarian landscapes are introduced in the "Orchard" and "Rivertown and the Valley" series. The artist grew up in Puerto Rico and studied historic preservation at Columbia University and art at Parsons. He also taught interior design at Parsons. He currently resides in Hudson, NY.
About the Artist:
Mulero works as a designer and painter in Hudson, NY. In his exhibition design work, Ricardo has synthesized powerful narratives into relevant immersive experiences for history museums, such as the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York City and the Field Museum in Chicago.
His training in drawing and painting began at a young age under the supervision of Spanish painter, Don Luis Bouzà, in Caguas, Puerto Rico. In the spring of 2014, while teaching interior design at Parsons School of Design, he enrolled in an oil painting class -- which rekindled a new chapter in his painting. Since then, Ricardo has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions in Puerto Rico and New York City, including Peter Madero Gallery, Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, Ateneo Puertorriqueño, in San Juan, PR, Catskill, NY (at CREATE Council on the Arts), Taller Boricua in New York City, and FIPAP (Fire Island Pines Arts Project) Biennial. Ricardo Mulero continues to benefit from art coaching at Parsons and the New York Academy of Art in his evolution as an artist.

- Meet June (Abstract Expressionist Oil on Canvas in Grey, Pink and Green)By Jenny NelsonLocated in Hudson, NYSquare abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas in stone blue, green, dusty pink, and brown, with hints of orange throughout 'Meet June' painted by Hudson Valley artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2023 Oil on canvas 30 x 30 x 1 inches, with white painted sides Excellent condition, ready to hang Signed, verso This square abstract expressionist oil painting was painted by Woodstock, NY based artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2023. The colorful abstract composition is completed in an expressionist style with loose and gestural brushstrokes in calming tones of green, stone blue, and brown. The contrasting patches of dusty pink, teal, and brighter greens pop against the subtle pale gray background. Color is applied in light layers which is noticeable in the faint yet visible under tones of the painting. The oil painting is unframed, with white painted sides so framing is optional. The artist's signature is located on the back of the painting. To say that Jenny Nelson’s paintings are a celebration of process as much as their final, balanced composition would be an understatement. Each one of Nelson’s compositions is a unique roadmap into how her brain operates. Curious, experimental, persistent, dedicated; hers is a confidence built over years of sustained diligence in the studio. Based in Woodstock, NY, Nelson has developed a unique language of artistic expression. Paintings in this series present improvisational, gestural strokes balanced with structure and open space. “By layering, adding and subtracting, a history develops on the canvas. Shapes have a story to tell. Lines that have been obliterated and resurrected have an emotional charge. What started as a wild party ends up as a contemplative, carefully edited composition, involving precise modifications, while hopefully leaving some life force intact”, says the artist of this process. Artist Statement: My work has always been anchored in drawing. I spent years drawing and painting from life. This instilled a strong sense of space and structure. At some point I became more interested in the negative space surrounding the objects I was observing and modifying the objects themselves. I began to organically develop an abstract language, but the sense of structure and organization remained constant in the painting. I apply paint in layers using palette knives, brushes and oil sticks. I initially draw loose gestures and a variety of spontaneous marks. Often traces of previous layers remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways I could not have anticipated. This process leaves me feeling quite lost a lot of the time, and I have had to learn to become comfortable with that feeling. This sometimes builds to frustration, and I will scrape off much of what was applied, but the result of doing this is often something wonderful that moves the painting forward. I view the painting process as a collaboration between myself and the materials. A conversation starts that has a beginning and an end, but everything in between is unpredictable. It seems at first some exciting things may show up but it’s important to disregard these first, too beautiful bursts, work over them, and develop something deeper from them. As the painting evolves, shapes and lines solidify, and I begin to see how the parts affect the whole. This way of layering, adding and subtracting, creates a history on the canvas. Shapes have a story to tell. Lines that have been obliterated and resurrected over and over again have an emotional charge. This process that started as a wild party ends up as a contemplative carefully edited composition, involving precise modifications, while hopefully leaving the life force in tact. About the artist: Jenny Nelson attended Maine College of Art in Portland Maine, and is a graduate of Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. She has been living in Woodstock, New York for nearly two decades, including a Residency at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony from November 2004-08. Jenny has been exhibiting for many years nationally and regionally.
