About the Item

Robert W. Petrick "Labyrinth" Construction series, 2022 Acrylic on canvas 56x56x1.5” NYC, 2nd street studio June 16, 2022One can easily become lost in Robert Petrick’s "untitled"’s kaleidoscopic neon labyrinth of acrylic. However, one does not become lost in the boredom of the familiar but in the excitement of the otherworldly. We so often feel lost in the same boring problems that forever plague our minds, the same irritations of our daily routines, the same empty and meager entertainments and distractions, that stumbling into a maze of the unfamiliar is one of our most exciting, terrifying, and boundary-pushing experiences. Petrick does not invite us into the labyrinth; he throws us in, and our eyes uncontrollably traverse its twists and turns. It attracts the viewer’s eyes like a magnet to metal, yet it does not draw their attention to a specific part of the canvas but, instead, to its entirety. - John Crowther, Critic Robert Petrick's paintings create a link between the street culture of the East Village, where he has lived for 31 years, and the power of symbols, geometry, and language. This work captures the excitement of the East Village in its color, shapes, energy and density. -- In 1984, Petrick stenciled two designs on walls along Avenue B. Capturing a moment in time, EXIST / EXIT and NOWHERE / NOW HERE were photographed and featured in Vogue magazine. The images presented graffiti as art, a concept that was gaining international attention after the release of Charlie Ahearn’s Wild Style and a number of hit songs and music videos. Today Robert Petrick is a prominent artist based in New York City.
