Shima Shanti I Cry for You2024

About the Item
"I Cry for You" is an original encaustic painting by San Diego Artist, Shima Shanti. This painting is inspired by the meeting place of land and sea where earth and water merge; the fleeting moment between time and space where one gives way to the other. Shima is an encaustic painter working in the ancient art form of painting with molten beeswax and fusing with fire. Up to 50 layers of molten beeswax mixed with earth pigments are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then each layer is fused with the flame of a torch. Shima's choice of all natural earth elements combined with her minimal aesthetic create patina and texture that is storied, translucent and luminous. In this simplicity unexpected levels of complexity surface. Shima's inspiration is borne from growing up in the endless abundance of water and big sky of Montana. This connection to nature has gifted her with an innate sense of color and composition. The unique beauty of the encaustic artform are bubbles, ripples and markings on the smooth-texture, high-gloss surface. Beeswax is one of nature's best preservatives impervious to moisture, UV light and will not darken or fade over time.

Shima works in the ancient and alchemical medium of encaustic, painting with beeswax and fire. Her impressionistic paintings of sea and sky are inspired by the rhythm and flow of water conveying a deep sense of peace within the natural world. In her studio, Shima experiments with the mercurial elements of beeswax. Layering bold brushstrokes of molten wax and pure pigments she creates a rough-yet-refined texture. Then with the flame of a torch, she smooths the wax to a satin finish creating deep luminous spaces that draw the viewer beneath the surface. Adding the elements—layering, fusing, watching the beeswax and pigment combine become her meditation. When she sees what she feels in her heart she knows her work is done. Like all impressionistic art and especially encaustic painting, creating her work requires letting go of every last bit of ego; allowing Spirit to guide her. It has taught her to treasure the imperfection and spontaneity of life. Shima and her husband, Jim Kelly live in the lakeside hamlet of Del Dios near San Diego. Timeless joy of lost hours in the studio and the simple pleasure of outdoors balance the business demands and travel of her artist’s career. Growing up in big sky Montana forever connected her with nature, giving her an innate sense of color and composition. She never expected to become a collected encaustic painter. However, years after moving to the coast of California, and after an established career in the corporate world, Shima felt that unrelenting desire that all artists have to create.

Artworks are in private collections all over the world: USA, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands, France, Spain, South Africa, Egypt, Australia, Japan, Singapore. The main focus of my painting is underwater world. I draw my inspiration during scuba diving. Underwater I have learnt not only about the many life-forms, but the shapes and colors of everything in that realm continue to blow my mind. I feel like I am in another dimension. I am an artist one of the new pioneers in the growing field of underwater painting and Andre Laban follower. I developed my own special course of underwater painting and approved it in PADI. By teaching people scuba diving and underwater painting I open a new world of inspiration, artistry and creativity. I help people to experience artistic way to live. Scuba Divers witness the changes happening in the ocean – and can be among the first to raise the awareness of others to these growing problems. Nowadays most scuba divers have underwater cameras, to record the treasures and tragedies happening underwater – in this case evidence of the destruction of marine life. Art too, is a very effective tool and medium to communicate these messages. My art is my language. I would like to make people more human, more spiritual, to find their soul, love and kindness through the reunion with nature. So I am very happy to have opportunity to attract people by my art to the nature, in diver to find an art person and show a new reality – underwater world to art person. I believe that with my paintings more people will fall in love with the world of the sea, and become involved in the protection of our oceans for future generations to enjoy and wonder at. That is what I wish to come of these works and this experience in my life. That is what I wish to come of these works and this experience in my life.
