What is a Monotype ?
Instead of on paper or canvas, drawings or paintings are made on glass, acrylic or metal plates and, while the paint is still wet, printed on paper using a press or hand rubbing. If this is done on a printing press, the print will have a plate mark like an intaglio.
The image design takes place as a printing process either by selectively applying the color or by selectively pressing or pressing through the printing material, such as thin paper. The motif is painted onto the support medium with wet paint and the print is made while the paint is still wet. So each print is a one-off.
