Elizabeth Winnel
BONE - Pop Art Illustrative Painting of Lips and Bone, Green, Purple, Red

2021

About the Item

This painting by Elizabeth Winnel is compositionally similar to work she has created in the past- a set of lips at the center of the painting, mouth open. This time, however, she has put a pop art spin on her usual photorealistic style. A light purple background is speckled with bright red sprinkles that are meant to depict facial hair. Light green lips open for a bone. "I often make tightly rendered, photorealistic lip and mouth paintings. I carefully plan them, source the resources required to set up my reference, and shoot the reference photographs, which I then edit in photoshop and then use that imagery as a basis for my painting. A few years ago, though, I was asked to do an illustration of a pop icon for a campaign, and at that time, I paired down what I normally might paint for the sake of clear, concise communication. I enjoyed playing with the flat paint, and found it pleasurable to draw from my mind rather than relying heavily on reference materials. I sometimes revisit that method to create paintings. I enjoy flat, intuitive painting a lot lately and feel that it has a lot of potential for continued material play. " Elizabeth Winnel moved from Canada to Savannah, Georgia in 2006. She graduated from The Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in illustration. In 2008, Winnel moved to Brooklyn, NY and worked as a painter. She returned to Savannah in 2010 to pursue an MFA in painting, which she completed in 2013. She is interested in the portrayal of the body as it pertains to body language and culture. Whether it is through color palettes, gestures, or symbols such as body hair or makeup, she questions where our biases in representational images lie and hopes to prompt the viewer to reconsider their relationship with a gendered lexicon of cultural motifs. Winnel has exhibited work nationally and internationally including in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Nashville, London, Berlin, and Toronto. She currently lives and works in Savannah, Georgia and Brooklyn, New York.

  • "Ben-day Sophia 1" Mixed media, Acrylic, spray paint, pigment ink 36x28 canvas
    By Ceravolo
    Located in Southampton, NY
"Benday Sophia 1" pays tribute to those paintings that became the trademark of Ceravolo's unique and trend setting style of painting. His work is collected worldwide and is in many important collections including, Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart, Hugh Hefner and Prince Jefri of Brunei to name only a few. In addition to those, his paintings came to popular attention when he was commissioned to create 5 large scale paintings for the lobby of The Palladium Theatre in New York City. In this painting, Ceravolo has featured an image of his pop art painting of Sophia Loren, and combined it with a pattern of benday dots to create the basis of "Benday Sophia 1". He then paints his trademark brush strokes and textures on the canvas over the pop art portrait. Then, he paints the "floating" illusion that creates the 3d floating effect he is known for. The Canvas measures 36x28".
