L'Aurora

Circa 1850

About the Item

A monumental 19th century Italian oil painting on canvas. Titled: Aurora, after Guido Reni. Presented in the original carved gilt-wood frame. Guido Reni’s masterpiece L’Aurora was executed in 1614, and the striking image is as powerful today as it would have been to a viewer at the beginning of the 17th Century. Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn, ushers in the day by leading Apollo, the god of light, across the sky. As she breaks through the cold, dark night, sun-rays (echoed by the flame-like frame) are cast upon the sleeping lands below. In the distance, fishing vessels head out to sea, no doubt welcoming the light, a symbol of optimism and hope for the day ahead. Gracefully dancing alongside the chariot are The Hours (symbolising the passage of time), their feet softly cushioned on the clouds. Above the four horses flies Phosphorus, personifying the Morning Star. The torch he carries is less bright than the sunlight surrounding Apollo, and is soon to be eclipsed by the sun - Aurora appears to glance back at the putto in recognition of this, and perhaps acknowledging their inevitable reunion the following dawn. Themes circulate around the painting, but in particular, hope, optimism, and the importance of seizing opportunities. It is the onset of a new day, and with it, regeneration, new beginnings, possibilities and potential, a valuable gift of hours that should be grasped and maximised by all: something that is helpful to be reminded of every precious day.

  • Hercules and Omphale, Old Master Painting, Mannerism, Baroque, Mythology, Prague
    Located in Greven, DE
Hercules and Omphale Oil on panel, 52 x 41 cm According to legend, Hercules had to make atonement and became a slave to the Lydian queen Omphale. When she found out who her slave was, she married him. Falling for his mistress and made effeminate by the luxury of court life, the former hero allowed himself to become the laughing stock of the court. He dressed in women's clothes, spun wool and did other women's work, whereas Omphale wore his lion's skin and carried a wooden club. When the time of punishment was over, the hero realised his delusion and left Omphale. So far, the painting could not be clearly assigned to an artist. Nevertheless, it impresses with its fluid and convincing painting, whose colourfulness and conception are reminiscent of the Prague School around Bartholomäus Spranger. This work follows an engraving and an etching made by Michel Dorigny in 1643 after a design by Simon Vouet. It shows the same scene but the print differs in minor details from the present painting (see e.g. the head of the lion) and the treatment of the faces seems to be painted more detailed and refined. So far there is no painting...
