Allan Osterlind
Spanish Flamenco Dancing Women in Garden, Oil on Canvas.

Early 20th century

About the Item

A fine painting of a group of Spanish flamenco dancing and music playing women in a garden outside a house painted by Allan Österlind (1855-1938). Oil on canvas mounted on board. Österlind studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts 1874–1876 and at the École des beaux-arts in Paris 1877–1880. He studied sculpture with Pierre-Jules Cavelier and during his first years in France worked as a sculptor. He received first prize for modeling after nature. He participated in the Paris Salon in 1880 with a drawing of a woman's head and was subsequently a frequent exhibitor at the major salons in Paris. In 1880, he began to paint watercolors and exhibited for the first time his painted work in 1883. Together with the Swedish painter Ernst Josephson, he settled in the French countryside and while working independently also acquired the technique of oil painting. In the exhibition From the banks of the Seine in 1885, he participated with three oil paintings and a drawing. Allan Österlind then participated in the Artists' Association exhibition in 1886. His next major oil painting, "Sorgehus i Bretagne" (exhibited at the Salon 1887), was purchased by the French state, as was "Vid dagens slut" (Salon 1888). In the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889, he participated with both oil paintings and watercolors and received the second medal. He became an associate of the newly formed Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1890 and thereafter exhibited mainly at their salons on the Champ de Mars. During the 1880s, he took a lively part in the opposition movement of the Swedish Paris-artists against the outdated Art Academy in Stockholm. He joined the newly formed Artist Association in 1886 and participated in their exhibitions until 1897. Österlind enjoyed a very good reputation over time and was awarded the Legion of Honor. Allan Österlind was an experienced portrait painter, a fine and sensitive watercolourist, a draughtsman with liveliness and energy in his presentation. His genre paintings were noted for unartistic freedom of arrangement. Many of his subjects were taken from Spain, where he liked to go on painting trips, and from France, where the artist lived from 1877. In Spain, he preferred Andalusia and painted several appreciated works in Seville and Ronda. Most famous are his flamenco dancing Spaniards. In France, he experienced his greatest success and there are several of his works in museums. Amongst them are the National Museum in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum, Ateneum (Finland) Luxembourg Museum, French Museums and more.
