Shilp Guru Babulal Marotia was born in Jaipur, India to a family already deeply entrenched in color. His father, Natu Lal Marotia was an artist who spent his free time painting and influenced Babu to do the same. Babu started practicing the specialty of miniature painting at the age of ten, guided by his father and the prominent artist Padma Shri Kripal Singh Shekawat. As a teenager, Marotia became a member of the Nawalgarh House, a painting community that specialized in all forms of Indian miniature painting (namely Jodhpur, Kota, Bundi and Jaipur). The exposure to the different styles of miniature paintings between 1980 and 1987 was instrumental in Marotia developing a style that is truly his own.
Marotia has exhibited widely and with success including in Dallas, Texas (2022), Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (2017) the National Media Center in New Delhi, Santiago (2017), Colombia (2016), Paris (2015), China (2014), Italy (2013), Switzerland (2012), London (2011), Greece (2010), Chicago (2010), New York (2009), Argentina (2008) among others.
Babu Lal Marotia is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards including the District Award (1992) and the State Award (1993) for Kota School Painting, the National Merit Certificates for the Kota and Jaipur styles (1995), the National Award (1997) by the Government of India and the UNESCO Seal of Excellence (2004, 2005). From the Government of India, Marotia was also the recipient of the Shilp Guru Award (2016) for his Jaipur-style miniature painting. He was later recognized by some of the most eminent personalities of the country including Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan (2011), Vasundhara Raje, the ex-chief minister of Rajasthan (2017) and Tina Anil Ambani on behalf of Harmony Art Foundation (2013). In 2003, Marotia had the honor of meeting and presenting his work to HRH Charles, Prince of Wales.
