Béla Czóbel
Woman in a Red Dress

c. 1945

About the Item

In an article published in Le Figaro (Paris, March 19, 1964), Raymond Cogniat comments on Czóbel’s unique artistic style. He writes: “...Czóbel, who arrived Paris in the first years of the Century and who had been contemporary to the great revolutionary movements in Art, had an artistic personality of sufficient strength to have resisted the influences of these various movements and to have preserved an independence which has made of him a truly solitary artist. One could try to associate Czóbel with the Fauve Movement and later with Expressionism, but this would be most arbitrary: Czóbel’s sense of liberty has left him with his own, clear-out individuality. Czóbel thus has submitted to no doctrine any more than did Utrillo or Modigliani or Rouault. There is simply in Czóbel’s Art a way of profoundly feeling the essence of things; a way of enveloping forms in an atmosphere of dream; a special luminosity in which the object is idealized and which embraces his subjects with a silent tenderness.”
