Frans Francken II17th century Allegory of the four Elements - Frans Francken the Younger Flemish
About the Item
Very fine 17th century Flemish old master "Allegory of the four elements" attributed to Frans Francken the Younger
The figures are the Nereid Amphitrite, holding a coral and representing water, the muse Urania, holding an armillary sphere as a symbol of air, the goddess Vesta, whose torch symbolises fire, and finally the goddess Ceres with her traditional cornucopia as the element of earth. Whilst allegorical paintings were very popular in the early 17th century, the present composition is very rare, we did find another example in a painting which is regarded as a joint collaboration between Jan Brueghel II (landscape) and Frans Francken II (figures). Collaboration was a frequent practice in 17th century Antwerp and allowed artists to excel in their niches and create paintings which combined the "best of each". The elements in the foreground of the present painting may have been executed by a workshop assistant.

Frans Francken II (1581–1642) was a distinguished Flemish painter, celebrated for his intricate and detailed works that often depicted religious, mythological, and historical subjects. Born into the renowned Francken family of artists in Antwerp, he was the son of Frans Francken I and trained under his father and uncle. Francken II's style is marked by vivid detail, dynamic compositions, and vibrant colors. He specialized in allegorical and historical scenes, frequently creating smaller cabinet paintings prized by collectors of his era. His works are noted for their meticulous brushwork and complex arrangements, often featuring a multitude of figures and intricate details. Francken II collaborated with other artists, adding figures to landscapes and architectural scenes painted by his contemporaries. Notable works include "The Seven Acts of Mercy" and "Triumph of the Eucharist," reflecting his skill in creating symbolic and theologically rich compositions. Francken II's paintings are significant contributions to Flemish Baroque art, and his legacy endures through the numerous works housed in major museums and collections worldwide.

- 18th century Portrait of a lady as Erato, the muse of poetry - Angelica KauffmanBy Angelica KauffmannLocated in Antwerp, BE18th century English school portrait of a lady, said to be Mrs. John Ruscombe of Colne, Lancaster, as the muse Erato This very skilfully painted portrait depicts a lady as the muse Erato, playing the Lyre. Her eyes are filled with emotion and her lips are curved in a soft, delightful smile. Hinting at the love song she is composing? Erato is one of the nine Muses in Greek mythology. She is the muse of lyric poetry, love poetry, and mimicry. Erato is often depicted holding a lyre, symbolizing her association with music and poetry. She inspires poets and writers to create works that celebrate love, beauty, and human emotions. Our painting was sold in the early 1900s as a work by Angelica Kauffman. Kauffman was an 18th-century Swiss Neoclassical painter who achieved significant success and recognition in a male-dominated art world. Born in Switzerland in 1741, she showed exceptional talent from a young age and received formal art training in Italy. Kauffman gained fame for her historical and mythological paintings, as well as her portraits, which were characterized by their grace, elegance, and classical influences. She was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and enjoyed patronage from aristocrats and royalty throughout Europe. Kauffman's work contributed to the rise of Neoclassicism and she remains one of the most prominent female artists of her time. - Spanish school. Secretary of Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos, bishop of Córdoba.Located in Firenze, ITPortrait of Francisco de Reynoso y Baeza. Secretary of Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos and bishop of Córdoba. Francisci de Reynoso. Early 17th century. Small-format portrait from the late Renaissance period. Spanish school. Size: Cm 19 x Cm 13.5 Oil on wooden panel. On the back the fine tablet is strengthened (already in ancient times) by a sheet of parchment. About 1600-1610. As often in Mannerist / Late Renaissance portraits, the image of the character is accompanied by the writing that runs at the top, adding a celebratory, historicising touch to the effigy. Let's bring back the sentence here: DON FRANCISCO DE REINOSO. CAMARERO SECRETO IESCALCO PIO QUINTO OBISCOPO CORDOBA. 68 (? O 7?) (1534, Autillo de Campos, Spain - 1601, Córdoba) Francisco de Reynoso was a Spanish cleric, chief chamberlain, and secretary to Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos, and bishop of Córdoba. He was the fourth of eleven children. His father was the seventh Lord of Autillo de Campos, and his mother was Juana de Baeza y de las Casas, daughter of Manuel de Baeza, a lawyer of the Royal Council and at the Court of Valladolid. Francisco de Reynoso was deeply devoted to the Virgin Mary and showed a strong inclination toward religion and piety from an early age. He studied Latin, arts, and theology at the University of Salamanca. In 1562, he traveled to Rome with his brothers Pedro and Luis. In January 1566, following the death of Pope Pius IV, Cardinal Antonio Michele Ghislieri was elected pope, becoming Pius V. From this period until Ghislieri's death in 1572, Francisco de Reynoso served as his chief chamberlain and secretary. After Pope Pius V died, Francisco de Reynoso returned to Spain and lived for several years in the city of Palencia, where his brother Manuel was a canon. He supported the Society of Jesus when it was established in Palencia, providing alms to the school's clergy and funding chairs of Letters and Theology at his own expense, as well as donating a significant number of books. During the brief outbreak of the Black Plague...Category
