The Chess Game
Signed "Georges Croegaert Paris" (lower right)
Oil on panel
This oil on panel by Belgian artist Georges Croegaert is a rich and exuberant portrait of the life of a clergyman. Entitled The Chess Game, the painting displays a wonderful sense of realism, exhibiting Croegaert’s skill for capturing texture, light, shadow and detail in each and every brushstroke. His works are distinguished by his uncanny gift for meticulous workmanship and are beloved for their intrinsic humor and charm.
Born in Antwerp in 1848, Croegaert studied at the local Academy, where he was greatly influenced by the style of his relation Jan Jakob Croegaert van Bree. He moved to Paris in 1876 and established himself as an important painter of genre scenes, society women, and, most of all, Cardinals. Paintings exposing the worldly wealth enjoyed by the high-ranking members of the Church were highly popular during this era of French history. Discontent with the hypocrisy and lavish lifestyles of the clergy, the public welcomed satirical works such as this one.
Croegaert's tremendous skill for detail offered the greatest commentary on the lifestyles led by high-ranking officials of the Church. In The Chess Game, elaborate furniture and exotic fabrics are set against lavish wall coverings to convey a scene of opulence and luxury. Croegaert's dedication to detail was so exacting that he often used single-hair mink brushes, allowing him to achieve the minute details found in the present work.
The artist exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1882 and 1914 and at other locales throughout Paris, Brussels and Vienna. He experienced worldwide popularity during his lifetime, particularly amongst wealthy English and American collectors.

- Dance of the NymphsBy Paul Desire TrouillebertLocated in New Orleans, LAThis lyrical landscape entitled Dance of the Nymphs was composed by the French Barbizon painter Paul Désiré Trouillebert. A joyful scene of nymphs dancing the morning fog, the work closely resembles an important work by the great Camille Corot, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). Renowned for his unique individuality that toed the line between the traditional and modern, Corot and his landscapes helped pave the way for an entire generation of Impressionists who followed him. Trouillebert perfectly captures the poetic atmosphere of Corot’s groundbreaking works, while also imbuing this scene with a freshness and character that is all his own. Trouillebert's oil on canvas is exemplary of the tradition of historical painting. The work perfectly combines a realistic depiction of the natural world with a spirited romanticism as his idealized nymph figures frolic playfully beneath a crisp morning sky. As a whole, it is a lovely composition executed with a level of skill and artistry that proves Trouillebert's exceptional talent in the arts. Born in Paris in 1831, Paul Désiré Trouillebert was a student of the academic painters Ernest Hébert...Category
