Angels Making Music - 16th Century Renaissance Fresco Fragment - Lombardy Italy

Ca. 1525

About the Item

Italian Renaissance Angels Making Music - 16th Century Renaissance Fresco Fragment - Lombardy Italy A detached Renaissance Fresco dating to the early 16th century, depicting three Angels making Music by an unknown 16th Century Lombardian Artist • Frame, ca. 74 x 44 cm • Panel, ca. 23 x 49.5 cm • Fragment, ca 22 x 48 cm Charming fragment, of what was once a larger renaissance fresco mural most likely in a private North Italian / Southern Swiss chapel over five centuries ago. Depicted is a heavenly orchestra, reminiscent of the compositions by Bernardino Luini (1480/83-1532) and Melozzo da Forli (1438-1494) of angels making music. The Angels and instruments are very finely painted with sections of the original gilding remaining. The fresco layer was removed from its wall using the “ Calicot ” also called the “ Strappo method ”, with small fragments of the old lower canvas still visible where plaster is missing and/or what looks like the upper canvas weave impressed on infills. The plaster layer was then laid down on a wood panel. When buildings with frescos would become derelict, be it either through decay, disaster or war (or all together), the frescos were sometimes saved by stripping them off the wall, stored away, never re-mounted and often forgotten. Others would be laid on canvass and skillfully attached to a stretcher, to continue to delight for centuries to come. Now, it is not known to me when the fresco fragment actually was separated from its wall or where that wall actually stood. However the fragment was laid onto a 20th century wood panel (pre/early 1970) and the uneven edges where tidied with dark, coarse plaster. The plywood panel supporting the fresco layer was then mounted on a velvet covered board and framed in heavy gilt oak. Recent Provenance: From about 1970 on, part of private collection Germany -> 2009 through inheritance into a private collection in Switzerland -> 2011, 14th May, Auction Ketterer Kunst (Germany), Lot 43 (catalogued as early 16thC, Lombardy - remained unsold/returned to the owner) -> 2020 acquired by myself. • Garçon avec des Fruit - Boy with Fruit - Oil on Canvas - Naive Painting
    By Nino Giuffrida
    Located in Meinisberg, CH
Nino Giuffrida (Sicilian, 1924, active in France) Un Garçon avec des Fruits • Oil on canvas, ca. 41 x 33 cm • Frame, made by the renowned framer Knöll from Zürich, ca. 54 x 46 cm • Signed top left Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Born in 1924 in Sicily, Nino already attended the artistic high school in Catania at the age of 17, where he befriended fellow painters including Pippo Aleo and Giovanni Calogero. At that time, he painted with passion everything he saw, landscapes, seascapes, still lifes. After a first attempt to come to France with his friend Giovanni in 1948, aborted for lack of a visa. Nino finally arrived at the Gare de Lyon on December 8, 1949 and settled at number 30 rue Gabrielle in Montmartre. Nino began to paint Paris. Like many Montmartre artists of this period, while he painted all day long, he moved about in the evening on the terraces of the cafés of Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Prés to transform himself into a portrait painter and randomly sketch the customers in restaurants. Nino then devoted himself more and more to the painting of children, which became his favorite theme of inspiration. Pierre Imbourg, journalist and art critic, wrote of him: "Montmartre, the land of little ‘Poulbots’, inspiring Nino to record in his mind all these childrens faces whose intense facial expression he would endevour to reproduce". It was also at this time that his career as a Montmartre painter influenced by cubism began. With the disappearance of the art galleries in Montmartre, Nino decides to settle on the French Riviera, in Cannes then in Vallauris. From 1952 his personal exhibitions follow one another and Nino becomes an international painter: Rome, Brussels, Chicago, Copenhagen, Helsingborg and Aüs in Sweden, in Geneva, in Kourou in Guyana... In Paris, he manages the Galerie de la Colonne...

  • Fine Old Master Portrait, by Gillis Claeissens, Portrait of a Lady, 1580, Bruges
    By Gillis Claeissens
    Located in Greven, DE
Gillis Claeissens Portrait of a Lady, probably "Anne Joigny-de Pamele" Oil on wood, 35,5 x 28 cm Gillis Claeissens has only recently been rediscovered as an important portrait painter of the 16th century. He received his training in the studio of his father, Pieter I Claeissens. Gillis became a freemaster of the St Luke's Guild in Brussels in 1566 and worked at the court of Alexander Farnese in Brussels between 1589 and 1592. Later he was also court painter to the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. After his return to Bruges, he created portraits of high Bruges society. It was only through the Forgotten Masters exhibition in Bruges in 2018 that the work of Gillis Claeissens was rediscovered. The present painting recently turned up in a private collection and was confirmed as a typical work by Claeissens by Mrs Oosterwijk at the Museum Groeninghe in Bruges. Gillis Claeissens or Egidius Claeissens (Bruges, 1526 – Bruges, 17 December 1605) was a Flemish painter of portraits and altarpieces and a member of a prominent family of artists originating in Bruges. It has only been possible to distinguish Gillis Claeissens' work from that of his father and siblings after scholars discovered a contract with the artist for the painting of a tryptich. It was further discovered in 2015 that he artist can be identified with the Monogrammist G.E.C. These discoveries have allowed to recognise Gillis Claeissens as an important portraitist alongside Pieter Pourbus in 16th century Bruges.
