About the Item

JOAQUÍN DOMÍNGUEZ BÉCQUER Spanish, 1817 - 1879 THE CARD GAME signed, located & dated "Joaq. D. Becquer. Sevilla - 1849." (lower left) oil on canvas 21 x 29-1/4 inches (53 x 74 cm.) framed: 21-3/8 x 29-5/8 inches (54 x 75 cm.) PROVENANCE Bonhams Sale, London, 11th November 2007 Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer (25 September 1817, Seville – 26 July 1879, Seville) was a Spanish Costumbrista painter. His family was originally from the Spanish Netherlands, and their name was "Becker". He studied in his hometown at the Academia de Bellas Artes with his cousin, the painter José Domínguez Bécquer. Later, he would become a teacher there, and a full member in 1847. When José Domínguez died, in 1841, Joaquín became the guardian of his son, Valeriano, who would also become a painter. His first major commission came from the court of Queen Isabella II to direct the artistic work being done on the occasion of the restoration of the Alcázar of Seville. This earned him the honorary title of Court Painter, and he was appointed Master of Drawing for the Queen's nephews; the sons of Luisa Fernanda de Borbón and Antoine de Orleans. He was a renowned exponent of the Costumbrista style, with Sevillian themes; many of which may be seen at the Museum of Romanticism in Madrid and the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga. He also did portraits, urban landscapes, and historical scenes; notably a large canvas depicting the Treaty of Wad Ras, which is displayed in the headquarters of the City Council of Seville. Several works may also be seen at the Museo del Prado. Much of his work, however, remains in private collections.

  • View of the Bergsee - Oil on Canvas by Josef Brunner - Mid 19th Century
    By Josef Brunner
    Located in Roma, IT
View of the Bergsee is an original modern artwork realized by the Austrian artist and painter Josef Brunner in the middle of the XIX Century. Original Oil painting on Canvas cm. 72 x 3 x 102 (canvas). A beautiful original XIX Century decorated frame is included (total dimensions: 100 x 5 x 130). Both the work and the canvas are in very good conditions. Beautiful and intense oil painting depicting the Austrian mountain lake Bergsee. The painting is characterized by a particular play between lights and shadows: the light indeed is distributed in an extremely suffused but homogeneous way on the view but it is also able to create that sense of magic that characterized the whole landscape. The color of the lake therefore assumes a transparency and an iridescent blue that tends to the green and reflects the color of the surrounding mountains. The sky appears full of rainy clouds but they still allow the rays of the last sun to shine on. The general vision conveys calm and tranquility thanks also to the refined use of color and the play of lights and shadows, the turquoise and the pale opaque blue of the lake is perfectly emphasized by the various green tones of the trees. The white, gray and light brown rocky mountains embrace the lake and the cloudy sky in shades of blue increases the feeling of tranquility. The landscape is desolate; the only signs of life are the three fishermen on the shore: they are three small figures painted in different poses and illuminated by the light too. The surface of the water reflects in a spectacular way the surrounding landscape, it is similar to the surface of a mirror. The style, fantastic and almost dreamy, is into the full Germanic Romanticism. Mindful of Caspar David Friedrich's memoirs (Greifswald, 1774 - Dresda, 1840), the author certainly took his cue from the style of the German and the Austrian Romanticism; tangible signs of Romantic painting are the choice of the subject, an uncontaminated Nordic landscape, and the almost fairytale atmosphere that we find in the composition. This wonderful Romantic painting was created by the Austrian artist Josef Brunner (Wien, 1826 - Wien, 1893). Joseph Brunner was the son of Joseph...

  • Twilight Landscape with Windmill and Church, 1891
    Located in Stockholm, SE
"Twilight Landscape with Windmill and Church" is a captivating work by Swedish artist Albert Larsson, painted in 1891 when Larsson was 22 years old. The painting captures a landscape steeped in the quietude of dusk, with a sky ablaze in hues of red and orange, signalling the end of the day. The silhouettes of trees are rendered with astonishing detail against the twilight sky, showcasing Larsson's early mastery of light and shadow. Dominating the pastoral scene is a traditional windmill, its blades stilled against the sky, alongside the spire of a church that pierces the horizon. These structures, together with the meticulously painted trees, are testaments to the human presence within the natural world, suggesting a harmony between the two. A notable feature is the small water-filled furrow in the field, which catches the fading light of the sky, creating a pathway of reflection leading the eye through the composition. This detail highlights Larsson's skill in using light to draw attention to elements within his paintings. Albert Larsson, born on November 4, 1869, in Malmö and passing on August 31, 1952, in Lund, was an artist deeply influenced by his education in Copenhagen at the Art Academy and later at Peder Severin Krøyer...
