John Deforest Stull
WPA Style Scene of Working Men Seated with Newspapers by John Deforest Stull

1939

About the Item

This beautiful and sophisticated large scale oil on canvas painting was realized by the esteemed American artist John Deforest Stull in 1939. The composition depicts a WPA style scene of two men- seemingly blue collar workers during the Great Depression- in drab earth tone clothing each holding a piece of paper rendered as a white cone. This piece of paper perhaps represents these men's respective resumes as they hunt for a new job, or perhaps a termination letter after losing their jobs. They sit on cubic forms (boxes)- one white, the other a vibrant ruby red- wearing tawny coats, black pants, brown boots and newsboy caps. The cubist background consists of an abundance of intersecting planar forms in muted shades of teal, grays and red. The loose expressionist paint handling recalls the work of Thomas Hart Benton, who applied the visual techniques of Goya to American Regionalism. This piece is not only aesthetically stunning, but documents an important epoch of our nation's past, making it a desirable acquisition for art collectors and history afficionados alike. With its masterful paint handling and refined color palate, it would be a winning addition to any style of interior from traditional to contemporary. It comes presented in a original custom oak gallery frame and is in excellent vintage condition. It is signed and dated by the artist. • Romanticist Oil on Burlap Painting of a Nude Male Figure Bathing in a River
    Located in New York, NY
This elegant romanticist oil on burlap painting was realized by an unheralded master during the first part of the 20th century. Realized in tight, yet expressionistic brush strokes, the painting depicts a nude male figure in the foreground with his back turned towards the viewer. The man has one knee raised (perhaps grounded on a boulder) and an arm extended into the abstract background whose frenetic white stroked and blocks of mossy greens suggests a frothing river. He sits on a large river stone in a rich olive hue clutching a white towel in his right hand that supports the weight of his body. The figure's torqued position serves to highlight his muscular physique- whose ideal proportions recalls classical Greek sculpture. In the bottom right portion of the composition, there is an abstracted form in a sumptuous brick red that offers an understated pop of color that provides a dynamic contrast to the flesh tones, organic greens and flaxen hues of the figure's hair. Masterfully painted in a sophisticated palate, this painting would be a winning addition to any style of interior from traditional to contemporary, and is sure to be appreciated by connoisseurs of classical art and homoerotic art...

  • Parisian Model
    By Max Weber
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
"Parisian Model" is an oil on canvas painting by Max Weber painted in 1908. The work is signed and dated, lower right, "Max Weber Paris 1908". The painting size is 35 1/2 x 19 5/8 inches. The framed size is 43 x 27 x 2 1/4 inches. "Parisian Model" was painted in 1908, when Weber participated in a life class in Matisse's studio in Paris and painted several nudes. Weber was influenced toward a more Cubist styler after seeing Cezanne's work in the 1906-07 Salon in Paris, and he consorted within avant-garde circles in Paris as early as 1905. After returning to the US in 1909, Weber was credited with showing American audiences Cubism based on his firsthand knowledge of the key players and the style. Several drawings of Weber's from this time are in museum collections at The Met, the Smithsonian, and MoMA and show a similar style and stocatto gesture. Parisian paintings by Max Weber are extremely rare as there are hardly any that have sold publicly. Provenance: Estate of the Artist Gerald Peters Gallery...
