About the Item
This original oil on linen artwork by Matt Talbert, titled "Daybreak," exemplifies the artist's skill in capturing the nuance of human expression. Crafted in 2023, this piece measures 18 x 22 inches (45.72 x 55.88 cm), housed within a frame that extends the dimensions to 19.25 x 23.25 inches.
Talbert's work here is characterized by a bold, impasto technique, where the oil paint is applied thickly to the linen, giving the portrait a tangible texture and depth. The subject's visage is rendered with a palette that balances warm and cool tones, creating a sense of living flesh and emotional resonance. The brushstrokes are deliberate and expressive, contributing to the overall dynamism of the composition.
"Daybreak" falls into the category of contemporary portraiture. It is a primary market piece, offered directly by the artist to the gallery. This ensures that the collector acquires a work of art directly from the creator's hand, with no previous ownership.
The framing of "Daybreak" is sympathetic to the artwork, enhancing its visual impact while ensuring its preservation. The selection of the frame, with precise dimensions, complements the textured strokes and the intimate scale of the piece.
Talbert's approach to portraiture is not just about capturing a likeness but conveying a mood and a moment. In "Daybreak," there is a sense of introspection and quietude, as if the subject is caught in a personal dawn of contemplation or revelation. This work would make a compelling addition to any collection, inviting viewers to return repeatedly to explore its layers of emotional and technical complexity.

Matt Talbert
Matt Talbert is a contemporary oil painter living in Southern California. Both a graduate from the Orange County School of the Arts and the Laguna College of Art and Design, he is now named one of the "Top 100 Figurative Artist Working Now" by Poets Artists Magazine. Matt's primary focus is expressive paintings of the human figure exhibited in galleries such as Arcadia Contemporary in Los Angeles and the Salmagundi Club in New York. While he grew up at the beach, Matt attributes much of his artistic development to his years spent in New York City. Working in the basement of the famous Pearl art store on Canal Street and meeting a wide range of artists from all disciplines was indispensable. You can find Matt’s work in recent issues of American Art Collector, International Artist, and Poets Artists Magazine. This summer he will be unveiling a large scale portrait commission for notable Australian architect Billy Kavellaris. I paint people, but I am more interested in conveying an emotional state rather than illustrating an outward appearance. I blur the line between our physical reality and the one that is going on in our heads. Using thick textures and bold colors, I combine both traditional and experimental techniques to enhance the emotions at play. Trusting my intuition, embracing spontaneity and doing so with confidence are the keys to my latest body of work. -Matt Talbert

- A Great Battlefield - A Lone Soldier Sanding in an Open Field, Oil on LinenBy William Blake (b. 1991)Located in Chicago, ILA solitary figure, head bowed, stands in a field in contemplation of what has just taken place or what is about to take place. "A Great Battlefield" channels the spirit of Winslow Homer's war imagery, bringing it into the contemporary world, asking us to contemplate the decisions forced to be made in wartime, some of which will never leave us. As for the paintings, William uses materials and methods of the Civil War era. The linen on which he paints was in use at that time as well as the tubed oil paints. He is one of the few artists who tacks his canvas to the stretchers using similar tacks that would have been used by Winslow Homer. While he leaves the works unframed for this reason, the artwork could certainly be framed. This piece is unframed. Please contact the gallery for framing options. A Great Battlefield oil on linen 60h x 35w in 152.40h x 88.90w cm WIL029 Known for his highly charged depictions of Civil War reenactments, William Blake’s powerful paintings show the recursive bodies of reenactors as they gesture across time. Participating in over 40 reenactment events, Blake currently interprets as the artist-correspondent Winslow Homer at these battle reenactments. He immerses himself in the materiality of his own obsession by constructing period clothes, camping on battlefields, and documenting the reenactment similar to Homer’s documentation of the authentic war. The figures in the paintings reverberate the past with respect and with a desire to educate, humble, and play. With each annual iteration of American Civil War reenactments, the reanimation of the past encourages a review of history and aids in its continuous revision. For his second exhibition with Gallery Victor Armendariz, William Blake presents A Great Battlefield, a collection of new paintings depicting US Marines...Category
