A fine c.1960 oil on board by Stanley Simmonds depicting the famous white coated porters at the original Billingsgate Market in the City of London. This painting comes from an important series of Billingsgate Market paintings that the artist created in the late 1950's and early 1960's, some of which are now in museum collections. Stanley Simmonds was an important modern British artist and art teacher who exhibited at the Royal Academy and with the London Group. Beautiful 1940's French post impressionist oil on board by Simon Simon-Auguste. The work depicts a simple bedroom interior with shoes, candle and a single picture on the wall. Signed lower left and presented in a swept impressionist style frame. Provenance: Chilham Castle, Kent Artist: Simon Simon-Auguste (French, 1909-1987) Title: Bedroom Interior Medium: Oil on board Size: 25.5 x 30.5 inches (65 x 77 cm) including frame Simon Joseph Simon-Auguste (20 April 1909 – May 1987) was a French artist, known for his intimate paintings, mainly portraits, nudes and still lifes. His production is characterized by a calm, intimate feel, and the effective use of glaze. Born in Marseille, Simon-Auguste was the son of Antonin Auguste, a cabinetmaker specialized in restoring furniture in the chateaux of the Provence. Simon studied at the École communale of his neighborhood at rue Eydoux, in Marseille, where he excelled in design. In 1931 Simon-Auguste finished his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts and won the Stanislas-Torrents award. He was commissioned to execute the mural decorations of the town hall in Allauch. He began exhibiting in Marseille where doctors and lawyers purchased his paintings. In 1932 he invested into a 6-month stay in Paris where he frequented the Louvre Museum and became specially interested in the Camondo Collection. In the latter half of the nineteenth century and into the first decade of the twentieth, New York City art aficionados could count on finding recent work of Seymour Joseph Guy hanging on the walls of the city’s major galleries. Primarily a genre artist, but also a portraitist, between 1859 and 1908 Guy showed more than seventy works at the National Academy of Design. From 1871 to 1903 he contributed over seventy times to exhibitions at the Century Club. From 1864 to 1887, he sent about forty pictures to the Brooklyn Art Association. A good number of these works were already privately owned; they served as advertisements for other pictures that were available for sale. Some pictures were shown multiple times in the same or different venues. Guy was as easy to find as his canvases were omnipresent. Though he lived at first in Brooklyn with his family and then in New Jersey, from 1863 to his death in 1910 he maintained a studio at the Artist’s Studio Building at 55 West 10th Street, a location that was, for much of that period, the center of the New York City art world. Guy’s path to a successful career as an artist was by no means smooth or even likely. Born in Greenwich, England, he was orphaned at the age of nine. His early interest in art was discouraged by his legal guardian, who wanted a more settled trade for the young man. Only after the guardian also died was Guy free to pursue his intention of becoming an artist. The details of Guy’s early training in art are unclear.
