Neapolitan Artist
Rococo Neapolitan Crucifixion Religious Painting 18 century oil canvas

hald of the 18 century

About the Item

The scene is dominated by the cross-on which the shiny white and very well defined body of Jesus is nailed to-depicted with a peculiar lateral perspective. The left side is occupied by the Virgin Mary passing out supported by the other two Maries while San John is lifting his arms up in a gesture of intense sorrow. On the right side, instead, Mary Magdalene, recognizable for the alabaster ointment box that is one of her attributes- is kneeling at the feet of the son of God. The skyline of Jerusalem appears in the background. The painting can be ascribed to a Neapolitan artist of the XVIII century due to similarities with the style common in that area. Especially with the works of Giacinto Diano (1731- 1803). Resemblances can be found in the pastel and delicate palette used, in the vivid but dignified way to express pathos (like the pose of the Virgin reminds of the one of Judith in the “Judith and Holofernes” held in a private Italian collection), in the thin but defined muscle structure of Jesus (comparable with the one of the Saint Sebastian preserved at the Indianapolis Museum of Art), in the sharp profiles with long noses and in the physiognomy characterized by oval faces with big round eyes typical of his compositions. (with frame, 95 x 82 cm)

Oil on canvas, 62 x 51 cm (without the frame) Even if on the background there is an attribution to “Francesco Gessi pupil of Guido Reni” by the bolognese art historian Guido Zucchini (dated 1945), recent studies are tending to add it to the corpus of Girolamo Negri called Il Boccia (Bologna 1648-1718) due to lots of similarities with his style (the pale and warm palette chosen, the profile) The painting represents a lady on profile wearing a brown turban, a yellow clock...
