Reuben Hunt
19th Century genre oil painting of children playing

1884

About the Item

Reuben Hunt British, (1857-1938) Taking Aim Oil on canvas, signed & dated (18)84 Image size: 19.5 inches x 29.5 inches Size including frame: 25.25 inches x 35.25 inches Reuben Hunt was born in Fulham on 6 August 1857, the son of the artist Charles Hunt (1829-1900) and Ann Sarah Kilbee. His grandfather was Charles Hunt Snr (1803-1877) and his brothers were Edgar Hunt (1876-1955), Walter Hunt (1861-1941), and Claude Hunt (1863-1949) who also became artists. His father Charles tutored all his children and his influence can be seen in their style and subject matter. Like his father, Reuben specialised in painting highly detailed humorous scenes often featuring children at play with animals. He does not appear to have married and lived in Fulham and later Granville Road in Wandsworth with his mother and father. Given the nature of the household and their similarities in style it is highly likely that he would have worked closely with his father and may well have collaborated on some of their works. After the death of his parents, he remained there with his brother Walter. He died at Stephens Hospital, Chelsea on 12 March 1938. Examples of his work can be found at the Whitaker Art Gallery, Rossendale. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

  • 19th Century seascape oil painting of Douglas Harbour, Isle of Man
    By William Edward Webb
    Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
William Edward Webb British, (1862-1903) Douglas Harbour, Isle of Man Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 21.5 inches x 37.5 inches Size including frame: 33 inches x 49 inches A busy quayside painting by William Edward Webb of Douglas Harbour on the Isle of man. Fishermen in boats can be seen preparing to head ashore as other figures make their way along the quayside. William Edward Webb was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in 1862 to William Benjamin Webb and Ellen Butler. His father was a printer and an artist and it is highly likely he received tuition from him. Following the death of his mother, his father remarried and moved the family to Manchester sometime after 1871. By the 1880’s, Webb had started working as an artist and later set up a studio at 30 Exchange Buildings in Manchester. He began exhibiting at the Manchester City Art Gallery from 1890, where he showed more than 60 paintings during his lifetime. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and Walker Art Gallery Liverpool from 1892. He married Clara Foster in 1899 and the couple lived at 1 Sylvan Grove, Chorlton Upon Medlock in South Manchester with their daughter Florrie. He became friends with the artist Walter Emsley (1860-1938) who also lived in Manchester. Although he spent the rest of his life in Manchester, Webb travelled throughout the UK painting coastal and marine scenes around the main ports and harbours. He spent a great deal of time in the Isle of Mann painting numerous scenes along the coast including views of Peel and Douglas Harbour, subjects he frequently returned to. Webb painted in a highly distinctive style; loose and informal but which manages to retain the sense of perspective. He struggled with ill health and depression throughout his life which sadly led to his suicide 9 November, 1903. In 1974, a retrospective exhibition was held at The Old Customs House and Old Solent House in Lymington, which brought a new found interest in his work. His paintings are now highly sought after and are represented in many collections and Museums including the Astley Hall...

  • 19th Century continental townscape oil painting of a busy harbour
    By Ludwig Hermann
    Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Ludwig Hermann German, (1812-1881) A Bustling Harbour Town Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1863 Image size: 26 inches x 36.5 inches Size including frame: 35.25 inches x 45.75 inches A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour. Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850). Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...

  • Antique 19th century English Victorian Waterfall scene landscape
    By John Brandon Smith
    Located in Woodbury, CT
John Brandon Smith, John Brandon Smith is an English landscape artist of some renown. He concentrated on the waterways of England, Scotland and Wales. He was particularly interested in the effects of cascading water. This led to his being given the moniker 'Waterfall Smith'. He was fascinated by the spectacle of rivers in spate. Many of his paintings concentrated on the rivers Conway, Llugwy and Lledr in North Wales but he also painted the rivers of England and Scotland. Some of his more celebrated works show The Swallow Falls and Aysgarth Falls in North Yorkshire. He used many shades of green and blue on his small, jewel-like canvases. He would occasionally introduce the figure of a fisherman to provide perspective. His themes are characteristic of the Renaissance of the European Romantic Movement. He exhibited twenty-two works at The Royal Academy between 1860 and 1874. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street. This is a very rare large example of the painters work. It is framed in an Antique English frame
