  • Grandpa and Naughty Boy Danish Master Genre Scene 19th century Signed Framed
    By Erik Ludwig Henningsen
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right “Henningsen” and dated 1881 at reverse. Attributed by Erik Ludvig Henningsen (1855 - 1930) was a Danish painter and illustrator. Masterly painted genre scene “testing grandfather’s pipe” depicting lively domestic moment. The little prankster wants to be like his grandfather, but how can he not try his grandfather’s pipe, which he loves so much and does not let go of even in his sleep. The curious and brave sly man, despite the consequences, took off his shoes to approach quietly... One can imagine his disappointment and emotions after he accomplished what he had planned... The boy's faithful friend, a small dog, looks at all this with interest and curiosity. Loved and admired for his talent to realistically portray life and tell a story at the same time, Henningsen took great pride to never include any personal feelings or philosophy, but to stay neutral to the subject matter for whichever painting he was doing. Antique oil painting on canvas, signed, framed. Size: 43 cm x 35 cm (roughly 16.9 x 13.8 in), frame 52 x 43.5 cm (roughly 20.5 x 17.1 in). Very Good pristine condition with minimal wear. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. He Traveled and studied in Germany, Italy, France and Holland, and received numerous awards and medals throughout Europe. He later became a member of the Royal Academy of Art. Exhibited in Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Lubeck, and many more. Erik Henningsen is always mentioned in the same breath as his older brother, painter Frants Henningsen. Both with their traditionally classic approach to realism, anecdotal undertones and bold use of dark colors, they were the most loved and celebrated illustrators of life and times; often depicting the hardships and trials of that day and age. One of Erik Henningsen’s large...

  • The Cardinal's Visit
    Located in Madrid, ES
SALVADOR SÁNCHEZ BARBUDO Spanish, 1857 - 1917 THE CARDINAL'S VISIT signed, located and dated "Barbudo / ROMA 1902" (lower right) oil on canvas 22 x 33-2/3 inches (55.5 x 85.5 cm.) framed: 36-1/2 x 48-1/4 inches (92.5 x 122.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Munich LITERATURE Visita con el cardenal combines the two most salient characteristics of Sánchez-Barbudo's work: the search for novelty of theme and narrative content, and the use of minutely detailed brushwork and luminosity. Sánchez-Barbudo specialised in elaborate 'costume pictures', delighting the viewer with impressive details finely rendered with dazzling technical virtuosity. Here, Sánchez-Barbudo depicts a well-to-do bourgeois family receiving a cardinal in their home. The interior, sumptuously furnished in the rococo style, along with the rich costumes and fabrics, are beautifully observed. Yet beyond the high technique lavished upon the composition, the treatment is comic and full of character and suffused with a gently satirising anti-clericalism. The cardinal, far from getting the attention he expects, is, literally, sidelined, his expression and body language showing his pique. There is no doubt that contemporary collectors and spectators took pleasure in the sight of noble self-respecting figureheads of the church being brought back down to earth. The comedy was appealing, and the message suited the prevailing political mood of an increasingly secular middle-class buying public. Salvador Sánchez Barbudo was born on March 14, 1857 in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). He was one of the most important Spanish artists of the "casacón" genre, who followed the Fortuny tradition in Rome. During his childhood he was under the protection of the Marquis del Castillo and in 1875 he moved to Seville where he attended the School of Fine Arts, becoming a disciple of José Villegas...

  • "Meditation" Dutch Woman Sewing Interior Genre Home scene Fruit Flowers on Table
    By Bernard De Hoog
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Bernard de Hoog was born in Amsterdam in 1866. He studied under J.F. Hulk and J.C. van Essen at the Quellinus School in Amsterdam. Mainly a genre and portrait painter, he occupies a distinguished place among the masters of Dutch modernism. He was associated with The Hague School, primarily a movement of realism, a reaction against Romanticism. He lived and worked in Laren, Haarlem, Bussum, and The Hague enjoying much commercial success. His paintings were readily exported to the United State, Canada, and England. De Hoog advocated the simple country life and produced many endearing interior scenes inspired by compassion for the impoverished existence of the Dutch peasantry. Set within a quiet domestic interior space, our painting catches a meditative moment of a woman in the midst of her sewing. A large window illuminates this intimate interior. de Hoog’s delicate brushwork captures the sunlight reflected in the woman’s red dress...
