Religious Flemish Painting Jesus Satan Temptation Tribute Baroque 17th 18th

About the Item

Flemish school 17th or 18th century Circle of Thomas WILLEBOIRTS BOSSCHAERT (Berg-op-Zoom, 1613 - Antwerp, 1654) Oil on canvas 72 x 59 cm (90 x 77 cm with frame) This work has been painted in a style close to the Antwerp school of the middle of the 17th century, to Anton van Dyck especially. We have found in particular several paintings similar to our painting in the works of Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert. After having studied with Gerard Seghers in Antwerp between fifteen and twenty-three, Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert became close to Anton van Dyck, whose workshop he may have frequented. A painting by Van Dyck, of very similar composition maybe with the same subject, was on sale at Sothebys in 2016. The composition of our painting is also very close to the painting by Titian who illustrated this episode of Caesar's denarius, and Van Dyck made a version of it that is also close in the composition, illustrating this precise moment when Jesus is shown a coin of Cesar. "Hypocrites!", he said, "why do you want to put me to the test? Show me the coin of the tax." They presented him with a piece of silver." "From the Emperor Caesar," they replied. Then he said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is to God." (Matthew 22:18-21) This said, since one does not see a coin in the hand of the tempting man in our painting, it is possible that the subject be The woman taken in adultery, with the man arguing with Jesus, a finger pointing to his other hand !

A masterful example of Italian Mannerist painting, this exceptional panel was composed by the renowned Florentine painter Domenico Puligo. Alongside Jacopo Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino, Puligo is remembered as one of the foremost figures of the Mannerist movement that rose to prominence during the 16th century in Florence. This panel of the Virgin Mary with the Christ child and Saint John the Baptist is a characteristic example of his celebrated devotional images, which grace museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Museo del Prado (Madrid), Palazzo Borghese (Rome), and Palazzo Pitti (Florence), among many others. Puligo’s skill with color is fully demonstrated in the beautifully preserved work. Considering its age, the vibrancy and the sheer range of color is remarkable. The Virgin Mary’s crimson dress...

Oil on canvas, 62 x 51 cm (without the frame) Even if on the background there is an attribution to “Francesco Gessi pupil of Guido Reni” by the bolognese art historian Guido Zucchini (dated 1945), recent studies are tending to add it to the corpus of Girolamo Negri called Il Boccia (Bologna 1648-1718) due to lots of similarities with his style (the pale and warm palette chosen, the profile) The painting represents a lady on profile wearing a brown turban, a yellow clock...
