Italian Renaissance Egg Tempera Fresco on Canvas, The Temptation of Adam and Eve

16th Century

About the Item

This art piece is a Florentine Renaissance period fresco of late 1500 hand painted with egg tempera representing the temptation of Adam and Eve, this pivotal moment in the history of genesis is framed in an oval scrolled cartouche and flanked by architectural pillars featured as two sculptural male and female caryatids holding the entablature of the palazzo. This antique Italian old master painting was once probably part of a huge decoratrive wall painting, this rectangular part was detach, put on canvas and framed. The antique solid wood frame is beautiful, quite thick, important and of great charm with original distressed faded gilding here and there. Adam and Eve, portayed as two young naked man and woman are standing against the trunk of a tree, she has the apple in her hand and Adam is kneeling at her feet. Surprisingly the apple is offered to them by a satyr twisted around the trunk of the tree - instead of a snake as we are used to seeing in the classic iconography of this religious scene- which represents the moment of the temptation immediately before the two being banished from the Garden of Eden after having eaten the forbidden fruit. The subject of this painting is very intriguing, the absolutely convenient size and architectural elements make it a great decoration artwork piece. The color palette with neutral tones allows this painting to be set even in the most modern interiors, the very material texture of the tempera is enchanting as is the original antique frame. The painting is in very good conditions considering that it dates back to the 16th century, stable surface and color. On the frame you can see small portions of the original gilding, old signs of woodworms that are no longer active. Dimensions: H. 146, 102, 8 cm
