Alfred Wahlberg
Summer Day on the West Coast of Sweden by Swedish Impressionist Alfred Wahlberg

Late 19th Century

About the Item

Alfred Wahlberg was a distinguished Swedish landscape painter whose career spanned Germany, France, and Sweden. During his early years, he resided in Düsseldorf, where he was influenced by his mentor, the Norwegian artist Hans Frederik Gude. Wahlberg's artistic journey took a significant turn when he relocated to Paris in 1861, where he encountered the burgeoning French Impressionism movement. This exposure prompted him to shift from the Düsseldorf style to a contemporary French painting approach. Wahlberg achieved notable recognition, securing medals at the Paris Salon in 1870 and 1872, as well as a top honor at the 1878 World's Fair in Paris. Among his renowned works is "Fiskläge vid bohuslänska kusten, 1869", which was later acquired by the Swedish monarch, King Charles XV. The painting presented here is also believed to originate from Sweden's western coastline, possibly from the areas of Fiskebäckskil or Fjällbacka. It is characterized by its vivid, spontaneous brushwork and the use of luminous colors. This piece showcases Wahlberg's exceptional ability to depict a summer day along a rocky shore, complete with a cloud-strewn sky and a multifaceted water scene, featuring a windmill. It stands as a testament to Alfred Wahlberg's mastery in landscape painting.
