About the Item
Brenda Horowitz’s continuing focus on the outer Cape landscape has allowed her to develop a deep understanding of the land, water, sky, and the relationships among them. It is this relationship, and her own intense emotional response to the place, that Horowitz is painting.
Writing in Artscope Magazine, artist Andre Van der Wende said of Horowitz’s work:
These paintings are as much about abstraction as they are about their subject matter. She ignites her palette with a perceptible new brightness, making their vivid stature more than just a skillful handling of color. They’re immersive and deeply sensory meditations on the landscape.”
This rare Horowitz, created in 1984 before she had developed her trademark red roofs and somnambulant quietude. The painting is, however, filled with signs of what would come. The gentle quiver of the rooftops, the soft, static lean of the overgrown wheat, the feeling of permanent dusk or permanent early dawn are all there in this painterly gouache landscape. This painting is art and artifact, and it contains Horowitz’s past, present, and future.
