Catherine Picard-Gibbs
"Ablaze", abstract, landscape, autumn, yellow, orange, red, oil painting

2014

About the Item

“Ablaze” by Catherine Picard-Gibbs is an abstract textural autumn landscape, painted in brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds that contrast with cool hues of grey and blue. This dynamic 16 x 20 x 1.5 inch oil on canvas painting suggests a stormy autumn day with trees and marshes and is framed in a black floater frame. Catherine Picard-Gibbs paints with bold brush strokes, using vibrant colors to show emotion and movement in landscapes and urban scenes. Her inspiration comes from the nuance and drama of her everyday world. Her evocative works have been featured throughout Massachusetts, in New York, and in the Midwest. Picard-Gibbs is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

  • "Echo 1", Pair of Impressionist Style Oil Painting on Canvas, Waterscape Diptych
    By Jill Hackney
    Located in St. Louis, MO
"A native of New Orleans, Jill Hackney studied painting at The Cleveland Institute of Art and Louisiana State University, where she earned her BFA. She is a founding member and twice president of Studio 801, an artists’ cooperative in Baton Rouge. She was also recently selected as a Fellow of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation for her work as President of the NUNU Arts and Culture Collective. Best known for her still life and landscape work, her focus is to show light’s impact on her subjects through layers of vertical and linear strokes. Using the natural texture of the wood on which she paints, each painting is approached with a sense of nostalgia. The end effect is a union of the senses, which awakens feelings of joy, serenity, and peace. Jill currently functions as the Director of International Communications for NUNU Arts and Culture Collective." "Echo 1", Pair of Impressionist...

"My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour. I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects. I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell...
