Charles Lapostolet
Light on the water, luminous river landscape with two lone figures painting

circa 1850

About the Item

There is a lot to see in this delicate, luminous landscape: a little fisherman, a figure in his canoe, and the beautiful light on the water. It is an early work by Charles Lapostolet, a French 19th Century painter who was born in 1824. Lapostolet debuted at the Paris Salon of 1848 and exhibited there until 1882. He won medals in 1870 and 1882. He became friends with Eugene Boudin, whom he had met in Honfleur. A marine painter, his compositions are inspired by those of the Dutch painters of the seventeenth century. Works by the artists are in the Museums of Lille, Dieppe and in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The size of the panel measured without the frame are 17.5 x 36 cm
