1830's English Oil Storm Clouds Norfolk Landscape Norwich Cathedral River Yare

1830's

About the Item

Storm Clouds over the River Yare *see notes below English School, circa 1830's circle of John Constable (English 1776-187) oil painting on canvas, framed canvas: 18 x 25 inches condition: relined canvas, overall very good and presentable condition provenance: private European Collection A very beautiful, period depiction of the Norfolk landscape, with far reaching views over Norwich Cathedral. The landscape depicts the winding River Yare under encompassing brooding storm clouds above. The work, unsigned that we can tell, is very close to John Constable in terms of period and style and his technique and style has clearly inspired the artist of this beautiful work. The Tate in London has a painting of nearby Great Yarmouth, which was painted by John Constable, which shows very similar rain clouds over the coastline, for comparison. The Yare is the frequent subject of landscape paintings by members of the early 19th century Norwich School of artists. The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. contains an oil painting by John Crome entitled Moonlight on the Yare. Joseph Stannard depicted the river in Thorpe Water Frolic, Afternoon (1824) and Boats on the Yare near Bramerton (1828) which is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
